View Full Version : Pushing Daisies and Cinema 4D
shoqman 10-23-2007, 04:37 PM Hey Everybody,
For the last couple of months I have been the visual effects producer for the first three episodes of ABC's Pushing Daisies. We built series assets that will be used throughout the rest of the series. We did all of the effects for episode 1 (140ish shots) and many of the ones in episode 2, as well as some shots in the pilot. All of the 3d stuff was done with Cinema 4d, under insane deadlines that couldn't have been met without it. Just wanted to let everybody know- it's a big show that has done really really well for ABC, and you can view it online (in HD even) at abc.com.
I wish I could post stuff so you could see some of the coolness, but they are very strict about it, so you'll have to watch the show instead.
Oh, and we used Renderking for a couple of shots that our farm couldn't handle, and it worked out great. :)

HEy congrats!
Havent seen the show but I've seen the promos and it looks good.
I've been using c4d (and RK) on some tv stuff too--spots and working on a cable series as well. We've finally arrived at the golden age of c4d.

How cool -- congratulations! I've seen the show a few times and quite like it. I'll have to pay more attention to the fx in the future.

Very cool man! I just watched that show for the first time last week, and the one thing my wife and I noticed was the copious amount of 3D. I really like the overall look of the show, and am thrilled to know that our beloved C4D is largely responsible. It's always nice to have Cinema featured in high-profile work. It does a great deal to legitimize the platform. Hopefully, one day, when I tell someone I do 3D, they wont come back with.. "Oh, you use Maya?"
Anyway, congratulations. Good stuff there :)

Great! Love the quirky aspect of the show... Like a cross between Amelie and Babe, stylized, idealized, with a literary narrator angle... Been watching since the start. The show does well at creating it's own world...
The establishing shot of the Pie Shop, that's Cinema? Nice work. Cinema involved in 3D set extensions, like the field of flowers in the opening of the premier?
If you hear of your work getting written up in any of the trade mags, Cinefex, CG Graphics World, etc. please post. Then we can read more of the specifics without breach of NDAs...
: )
Congrats Shoq!

Thanks for all the comments everybody! It really had been quite something. We are currently not involved (tonight's episode, "Pigeon," was not done by us) but hopefully we'll do more in the future.
We kind of killed ourselves to build the assets and get the first three out and then the number of shots just began to skyrocket- like, 200+ per episode, per week. We are a small studio, and really just can't handle that many shots in that timeframe (well, we did it in the first episode, but at an un-sustainable number of working hours.)
But hopefully they can cut the number of shots down or something. We did some really good work and would love to do more.
