I need ships, and lots of them.

Let me introduce who I am and what this is all for. My name is Hieu Le Bui and I am an artist and also creator of a comic book series that is 99.9% accepted by a major publishing company. I am co-writing it with a known writer that at this time I cannot name and so is the name of the comic. The world of this comic series is a cross between Superman and Battlestar Galactica. So I need lots and lots of ships. The art and scripting on in development stages right now and I have little time to built ships myself in MAX. Therefore I am putting out a call for ship builders out there that can build for me several classes of ships for this world.

Hereís what I need. There are two races, one is human the other an alien race that is a cross between Cylons(BSG) and Replicators(Stargate). It is set in the 26th century. So go advance as you can with the models.

I need on the human side multiple heavily structure warship classes like the ones in Babylon 5 but they need to be wider, has rotating firing system on both sides with laser canons mounted somewhere on top. Also half a dozen of opening bays for fighters to enter and exit the ship. The engines are semi-rocket and warp like in Star Trek so choose the latter. I also need a small one man fighter class that has similar shape of the Cylon raiders but reverse engineer it to look human with a viewable cockpit. Be sure to add the little details as much as you can.

The alien race I only need one type of warship class. I have no preference for what it could looks like just that it need to look alien. I also need a fighter class too but unman. Everything about the alien race can totally be up to you. Be sure to add the little details as much as you can.

Above is a picture of what kind of comic and art this book will have. The reason that I need 3d models of ships is because I want to not think about drawing it from my imagination but actually pose it and importing the image into Photoshop and tracing it to fit the style of the comic. This is an open call that Iíll leave it open till the end of December if I don't get enough submissions. So tell your friends and neighbors about this.

Please when you finished a model, take a gray scale picture of your model and post it here in this thread. All models do not need to be colored or textured. Just plain old one color will do. Gray if you can do it that way. If you have time to textured and colored it then great and post them. I will however need the model to be exported as a file as some kind of a simple format where I can import them into 3D MAX later. Submit as many models as you like there are no limits. If chosen your name will be listed in the credits as one of the contributors to the project. This is a non-paying job but like I said you'll get credits and exposures.

Thank you.

you might want to ask for a concept artist too

modellers like to work from art normally

Maybe I have some ideas. But first I'd like to know the direction of the main design. Should it be organic for the human race or non-organic?
Should the weaponary be visible all the time or more a type of hatch hidden? I have some fighter sketches at hand so I see if I can post them here, because for me warship is just a grown up fighter and maybe the sketches can be a basis. But first some more design rules would be usefull, because I don't want to combine just styles from different tv series. How are the different races? Are the humans explorers who have to face an alien menace? How is the attitude of the alien race. I think that a design wouldn't look right if it don't fit's to the whole concept of the story.

Modeling would be another question, but there would be a lot of experienced people here.

regards
Christoph

Human should be non-organic and more like the Battlestar of BSG mixed with the Destroyers of B5. The alien can be organic and their main weapon are cutting lasers like the Shadows.

Should the weaponary be visible all the time or more a type of hatch hidden?

Up to you.

Are the humans explorers who have to face an alien menace?

The warships are for defensive where the alien is more of a menace.

I have no specific looks in mind so I am opened to anything that looks cool. When the project is 100% a go I will think about profit sharing with the person doing the modeling/designs of the stuff I need. The writer Iím partnering with is taking class this semester so right now I am doing preliminary stuff right now.

Ok, I think that I have some ideas till the end of the week. But I'm more a fan of doing layouts before I model something so I hope that's ok for you.

Sounds interesting
how much detail?
poly size/count?
what format??

I use LightWave 3D mostly. I do have 3DMax but rarely use it any more..

how much detail?

enough but not a whole lot

how much detail?

doesn't really matter

what format??

Lightwave can export the mesh into other format like 3ds I think so it should be okay. Not texture needed like I said.

Ok, my first and very early idea. I think that even with the BSG/B5 things in mind the designs should have something in difference.
It's just a fast concept, so that we have something to discuss about.

Looks good but rotate the engines to match the diagonal wings it is going with.

I initially thought that it would be cool to have two main fighter bays at this position so I'll attach an engine block to make it clear. Two other concepts are in work at the moment.

I alter the concept to your request.

I've changed the whole thing a bit. Added some BSG-ish engines as well as defense/attack weaponary.
The sketches are showing two of the other ideas I've hade. The Nimitz class warcruiser is obviously influeneced by todays carrier designs and the Orion class in more towards the BSG edgy type of design without the big front like the battlestar

Unfurtunetly only 3 attachments are allowed so here's the last. The Phoenix Class is as you requested a really wide ship compared to the omega class in Babylon 5. The curved front edes of the wings would also allow it to make some glowing hyperspace engineintake-effect.
