I'm afraid the initial concept sketch for this illustration is little more than a scribble. I'm working flat out to get this done while I have some free time, so the usual process goes out the window. However, the competition rules require something:

I doubt it's clear what this is all meant to be because of my hideous scrawl. What we have is a robot, in classic portrait pose, considering the audience. It's missing and eye but appears to have found a slightly icky replacement from somewhere.

After making the (very) rough sketches I started modelling. Normally this is a recipe for disaster but I had a clear idea of what I wanted. Knowing I have so little time is a great incentive to work fast:

No time for fancy character rigging with this model. Posing it was done by moving components around. Grouping them appropriately helped:

Work in progress images to follow as soon as possible.

Got the figure sorted and in the right pose. Here's a quick render:

Just need to fix the background and I can put it all together. Then comes the fun part when I get to paint all the detail in.

I didn't have any more time to work on this last week so the news that the deadline has been extended was a pleasant surprise. Here's what I've been able to add:

I had time to do some more work:

Some more work picking out details on the edges, especially the hand. I doubt I'll have much more time to work on this so I'll submit it in the next couple of days.

I've submitted the final image. It's my own fault I had so little time to work on this. I should have started earlier so real work wouldn't get in the way. Still, it was fun.

Edit: Having cocked up the whole entry process I've now added my concept and model milestone images. That's why they appear at the bottom of the thread. Honest, I will pay attention next time.

I'm afraid the initial concept sketch for this illustration is little more than a scribble. I only have a couple of weeks to work on this and I'm fitting it around client jobs, so the usual process goes out the window. Actually, that probably is the usual process.

Our robot friend here is doing its best but, slightly confused, has found an unpleasant replacement for a missing part.

Sorry if the JPEG compression makes it a bit harsh. The final image is softer.

Looks great! I suggest more blood, forget drops (or maybe somewhere inthere), let it flow...
You got plenty of time to experiment.

Good point. I don't think I'll be able to do any more on this though. Real work gets in the way.

Congratulations! High in shock value, like your modeling, textures and lighting. Best of luck

Hey Paul, great image, I like a lot. The robot design and textures are great and the contrast between the mechanic robot and the organic eye is a great touch!. Congratulations for this great artwork and best of luck with your entry! Cheers mate!!

Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. I don't think I'll win anything because I rushed it so much, but it was fun to do.

nice finished art. there are so many illustration entries to see, i must have missed this one. i like looking at the work in progress shots. lost of nice detail. that arm is really cool.
the final rendering has some great "gritiness" to it. makes you wonder just how this robot managed to get that eyeball.

Thanks. I'm glad people like this. A lot of the detail in the final version is from painting in Photoshop. Very little of the blood and eye detail was in the final render. I find it easier to add things like that by hand.
