And I take it, it is becase the default roation switched to euler.
Can anyone confirm or deny this...

Not really.
When using TCB Controllers in Max 5.x, the TrackView will not show function curves for them.
If you switch to Dope Sheet, you will discover that both objects from old Max versions and newly created objects with TCB rotation controllers will show keys there.
I tested with a Max 2.0 scene (Fall 1997!!!) in Max 5.1 and got exactly the same behavior from Max 2.0 and 5.1 objects.
Btw, TrackView in Max 2.0 (and any other version prior Max 5.0) also did not show function curves for TCB, but the default display mode was not curves, it was keys. Since Max 5.x now shows by default the curve editor, you have to switch to Dope Sheet to see anything editable for TCB tracks.

I'm still getting to grips with the new functionality of Max 5.1's track editor.
But you are right you can edit the keys position in the dope sheet...
