i know there's a way but im getting a error every time i try ...

Im pretty sure you have to open the Maya 4 scene file in notepad or something equivilant and change or remove ( cant recall ) the line that says Maya 4 file to Maya 3. There was a previous thread on this same issue. Try and search the board.

Just download thae Maya423 script off of Highend 3D

the Maya 423 script is nice and easy...in fact I used it in a production environment where we had to deliver data in a resident Maya 3 format but where using some Maya 4 motion tools...anyway...I believe all the Maya 423 script does is change the header anyway [what Sigma mentioned earlier - about editing the .ma or .mb in notepad]...
...but, please make sure you are not trying to use the script with resident features only available in Maya 4 in your file...they will not transfer back to 3...even with the 423 script...
