You have several chances: SLA, Pyrocluster, particles... what kind of smoke? cigarette smoke? factory smoke?

try throwing a visible light (that doesn't cast any shadow and doesn't emit radiation) in a particle emitter, play with it and with deflectors a bit, that should do the trick

there's a smoke preset on my website, you will need the free ditools (www.remotion.de.vu)

you'll need v8 to open the file i'm afraid, but if you download the demo that's enough for you to be able to copy the settings from my file into v7.

mdme_sadie...i just tried your file with r8.1 opens up but gives me a warning about a
"several plugins used in the scene are missing
savings may cause loss of plugin data!
Plugin 'Flat Color' ID1006446"
i just ok message and scene appears fine.
however if i do a render view...blank (frame 1 or 33 etc)
if i render to picture viewer...i get an error "unable to write to file"
if i ok that message again blank nothing appears.
i know you're not tech support but any ideas...
(i don't have any sdk installed as far as i'm aware...unless this auto installed...drawing a blank really...would that make a difference...whats flat color is that a plugin you got running or something?)
thanks
I once made this cigarette smoke in 7 using just a visible spot light with wavy turbulence on it.
Let's see if my link (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/3Dsamurai/files/smoke3.mov) works...
Not as nice as Sadie's smoke but it's ok, and it is extremely simple to make.

flat color was a free component of praline from bhodinut, it's just a shader, try removing it from the smokes material (i can't rememeber what i used it for in that scene).

Kirl : takes me to some yahoo thing and wants me to join.
mdme_sadie: ok flat colour was in diffusion but not been used...removed it...tried a render wouldn't let me write to file...but allowed me to do a preview and works fine...flat color in a few channels...just removed and fine...
oooh and thats so damn damn clever btw...love the use of materials...(fusion overkill) and dishaper...was playing with that today...after actually reading the reference pdf...and thinking to myself....what can i use that for...its kinda funky...well seems you've come up with a cool idea...sparked much potential.. thanks bud for sharing oooh and helping me out there..

ummmm.. couldnt see the pic. but i do still need help with some smoke effects... im a noob at this so please be patient with me. thanks.
I was afraid it would ask to join. It's on my Yahoo 3d user group, I don't have anywhere else I can store it.
I'll just post a screenie... Though it's better in motion.
So this is a visible spotlight pointed up, with only some wavy turbulence in the noise settings (some tweaking needed). It's very flexible and easy to change.
