I'm asking for some advice / opinion(s) on Maya Complete and how it lends itself to doing Architectural rendering/animation...

We are looking at switching apps potentially, from LightWave to Max. However, Max is a bit expensive, and frankly, it's not Maya... :buttrock:

Anyway, I've never worked in Maya, so I'm unfamiliar with its' featuresets, especially as to how Complete differs from Unlimited, (which is definately out because of costs!)

With Complete... I need to be able to model, texture, light, render, animate the camera, animate ojects such as doors opening, cars driving, and flags waving, as well as fountains running (particles)... water rippling... Can ALL of this be done using Complete, and does anyone have input as to how they like working in Maya for Architectural animation???

ANY INPUT WELCOME, well almost any... Thanks a lot!

You can do it in Maya Complete. I can also say that it can be done faster than in Max.

Maya Unlimited = Maya Complete plus:

Maya Fluid Effects
Maya Cloth
Maya Fur
Maya Live

kamil - Great, thanks.

How about network rendering and que management? And tree plug-ins?

Also mate, there is Mental Ray (for free). This will give you the best visual effect to simulate a real-world scenario.
There are multiple packages to model in if Maya does not suit, just import. Well thats what we do.
Max also has availability to Mental Ray but it not free.

Stick with Maya mate.

well depending on what you're doing you might appreciate the more advanced modeling tools in Alias Studio. This would be useful if you need to make complex, rigid surfaces. (Alias Studio isn't as good at deformations as Maya but it sounds like that isn't really important to what you're doing.)

PaintEffects. It`s in Maya Complete also.

Cool... I was also wondering about post process? We were looking at Combustion since it ties into Max... Is there a similar link with Maya Complete for post work (using Material ID's for defining adjustments, etc...)?

Aslo network rendering, is there a limit on the number of render nodes a single copy of Complete allows???

I'm definately liking the sound of this...

Thanks everyone,

It depends on which renderer you want to use.

In upcoming Maya 5.0 you will have four rendering options -

Maya Software, Maya Hardware, Maya Vector and Mental Ray

Maya Software - unlimited number of procs

Maya Hardware - it is GPU based

Maya Vector - I am not sure

Mental Ray - as far as I know up to 4 procs on the same workstation

You can bake some of Mental Ray advanced effects to textures and use any renderer you want.

Hi everyone, this thread caught my eyes as i'm also doing a bit of architectural viz. Demo38....what you might find attractive in maya 5 is that it now imports dwg files. That's one of the main reasons why I've been on 3ds max for a few years now. Interesting to know how the smooth it is to import a dwg file into maya 5. Definitely paying close attention to maya at the moment.

I'm having some wierd experiences importing a dwg files(made with dataCAD), some of the file imports as splines and some as extruded geometry, which is a pain to model from, anyone know a fix for this? I'm no CAD expert and the guys who sent me the file well they use dataCAD and their draftsman just quit:surprised

Hope someone has a suggestion, thanks
