A little question though; On my screen, theres a differens between the one eyed monster and the background, but not on my hubbys screen. The colors are realy strong on his screen but OK on mine. Can you guys see a differense between the right character and the background?
Cyanid - thanks - it's my fat ninja again - love your pumpkin - actually Im working on illustrations for a cookbook with similar roughness and textures...
Alice - really cool one... and yes on my moniter it's a clear difference

^_^: I liked it.
@_@: Guh... It tasted like f*#&% feet man!
This happened to me when I was kid. I hated swallowing every bite. Sis loved it though.

Just finished this for my little cousin last night. It's one pumpkin.. four sided.
It's Frankenstein, Dracula, the mummy, and the wolfman.. The wolfman sucks.. Decided to put him on there at 2 a.m. It was just a bad idea..

Wow, Gatlingg, that's such a nice composition of colours :)
simonjaap, that is a little creepy if you look more than than a few seconds :)
rkraiza, looks really good with the light inside.

That's really neat, rkraiza! I like the mummy portrait the best because the candle shows the wrinkles off nicely. I'm a little envious as it kinda puts my little bat pumpkin to shame. Great job! If you don't mind my asking, how did you go about carving it?

Thank you. And no problem. I start the regualr way cutting off the top and emptying the pumpkin. I just carve it with a set of wood carving blades I have. Use a straight one for the main chunks and then two curved blades one with the sharp edge on the inside and the other with it on the outside to do the details. Do allot of scraping too once the orange skin is off. Just do it like a regular relief culpture. Oh and I really hope the pumpkin I get is thick or else there won't be very much relief..
rkraiza - oh oh oh - really awesome stuff... very good!!!

Thank you very much for your insight, rkraiza. I suspected that you used different tools than what I had at my disposal because as I glanced over at my ordinary paring knife, I couldn't imagine how it would create the texture you managed. The candle glow really creates a nice eerie effect on the portrait. As such, I am tempted to try your method next year. :) One final question though, do you go straight into the sculpting or do you have a method of somehow mapping out the image on your pumpkin first? Thanks again for explaining.
And, because I thought it juvenile of me to complain about my pumpkin without offering it up for critique, here's a picture:
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x14/sneakingSneaker/batPumpkin.jpg
I should mention that it's supposed to be a "little brown bat" but the image I referenced was searched with the keywords myotis lucifigus. Anyway, I meant to have him smiling with the wings tucked in front of him but I'm not certain that came across.
Loved the topic, what with all the fun entries! And I like pumpkins.

I like your pumpkin. I really like good old straight through carved jack-o-lanterns. I do draw onto the pumpkins first. I print out some reference for who ever ir whatever I'm carving then draw freehand onto the pumpkin from the print out and just go to town on it. I use a small wood handled carving knife with interchangable small blades. I have 6 different shaped blades. I also sharpened the edge of a spoon for larger ares but gave up on that and just used the carving knife. The blades are really, really sharp so it takes very little effort to go through pumpkin flesh. Good luck with that.
