View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of Windmaker - 2D/3D
Windmaker 10-21-2007, 12:27 AM Hello everyone:)
My name is Yuriy. I'm 22 and I just plain like drawing. And painting. And modelling. And texturing. And... ehm... cooking. I work as a game designer (which has nothing to do with drawing... or painting... or any of the above) and am currently studying last year of Applied mathematics (which also has nothing to do with all of the above. Not even cooking...). I'm self-taught, if we don't count all the helpful advice I've gotten from from friends and family and other people on art-related forums.
I'd really like it if I someday become organized enough to learn anatomy to a somewhat decent level. And I hope posting here will get me more constructive feedback and motivation to improve. And draw more often. Or model. Or whatever it is I do...
First are some lifedrawings from the last three weeks. I've been only been going once a week lately, but I hope that'll change next week.
These are from three weeks ago.

And that is what I've been doing the last two days.
I decided to do some torso studies and since I know how useful it is to create something in 3D (wether digital or out of clay) in order to understand its form, I decided to do them in ZBrush.
The basemesh was done in 3DS Max. All the rest is ZBrush 3.1 They are all speed sculpts to some extent since they were all done in between one and two hours.
(images are in the next post to prevent text stretch)

Rebeccak : Wow! I'm really glad you like my stuff! Thanks for the welcome:)
anandpg: Thanks! I hope I'll live up to the expectations:)
SpiritDreamer: And thank you too, mister Spirit Dreamer:)
Here is a pencil value study I did today. I was planning on doing more torso studies, but I suddenly (in about three hours...) did a pencil study. After I uploaded it I noticed alot of things wrong with it, but I still like it anyway. The reference is from www.characterdesigns.com (http://www.characterdesigns.com) .

Here is a step-by-step. For some reason I like doing step-by-steps.

Great gestures and a nice tutorial too! Like your 3d too, although some of the structures seem to flatten out. More noticeable in the butt and torso area. Keep it up!

NR43: Wee! How nice:) People falling in love with my thread! Thanks!
-voraz-: Thanks! I'll try to keep it up. We'll see how it goes:)
System404: Thank you:) You're right about the flattening. Too bad I only notice those things after they've been mentioned to me...
I fail at updating... Too much work. And then I started learning how to paint environments... And am still at it... with a changing success rate. And that is why I hadn't drawn or painted anything remotely figurative since... a long long time.
However, that changed yesterday. So I managed to do a few figure studies in Photoshop. All were done in around 20 minutes a pose. They're not all that accurate, but I still like them:)

And here is a step-by-step of the process. Because I like doing those. And since I work on a single layer which I constantly duplicate for backup, I always have all the progression shots available.

vaaken, anandpg and Cyanid, thanks for the good words!:) I'm glad you like the pictures:)
I sure do fail at updating... I have a ton of excuses for it thoug. All kinds - work related, being ill, having a whole lot to study and whatnot. But most of all this (lack of updating) is because of me being lazy. I excel at being lazy. If only I could get someone to pay me for being lazy... Aaaanyway, I really haven't done all that much in the last few months. And I fear there may be a drop in the level of quality, and there is also a lack of recent anatomical 3D work... But still, I hope you may enjoy seeing what I've been up to all of that time.
Also I have some really ambitious plans about recording myself making a character pinup in pencil, but I'm not sure if it'll be of any use to anybody. Any thoughts on this? I'm currently trying to improve my rendering technique in order to avoid smudging the graphite as much as I have in some places here.
So anyway, here are the drawings. These are all in chronological order - starting with the oldest and ending with the newest.
First off are some digital character pinups which I wanted to use for a portfolio, hoping to get a job as a concept artist maybe... But in the end I didn't submit it. I decided to keep my current job until I finish my education (only one semester left until I become a bachelor of applied mathematics and informatics. Cool, eh?:) )

Next are some lifedrawings. I stopped going to lifedrawing sessions when all of the working-studying-illness-lazyness problems started. And I started going again a few weeks back. And then I stopped again. And I'm hoping of starting going again this or the next week.

And the last batch of lifedrawings. I was really depressed that evening and it shows. Some of these aren't all that good.

Thank you all for looking:)
Critique away if you've got the time and feel like it:) Also, if somedy has any question regarding my technique or something I've made - feel free to ask. I always like helping people. I don't know if I'm in the position to teach, but it always feels good, when one's able to help.
Have a nice evening now:)
Excellent work, and a great method to drive your improvement as well. It's already very good and if you keep up with all this it'll wind up at a stunning quality level. In some of your sketches, with characters that have open hands, the fingers come to an unexpectedly sharp point. It fits some characters really well, but the beefy fellow (http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/5240/scan080131000401uk2.jpg)'s hands seems a touch delicate.
That is a pretty fine nitpick for a sketch... man they're really good :). It'd be interesting to see your thumbnail process, you get a nice variety in design and character here.
