im really stuck, i dont know what file extension to render things in maya4.5 so that i can import them to ae5.0, and have them combined wiv a DV footage file i have got...

any help please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please

.SGI or .TGA should work fine out of Maya. If you had AE 5.5, you could also use .IFF and the .ma (Maya camera import) stuff, though. It's a good upgrade to get...only $100 or so IIRC.

ahhh cheers man, and will that work wiv animations too?

Yes, it'll work fine with animations. Maya only really renders out image sequences. In the render globals, set your image format to something After Effects will read (8-bit/channel .SGI or .TGA.) I usually set Frame/Animation Ext to "name.#.ext", and frame padding to 4. Unless you turn on "composite" down in Render Globals->Render Options, Maya will premultiply the edges of your animation's fill with whatever your camera's background color is set to (usually black), so be sure to interpret your rendered 3d footage correctly in after effects when you import it, otherwise you'll get a fringe around your 3d elements.
