Hi everyone! This is my first 2D-CG post here. I have a 3D model I'm working on but decided to take a break and do this instead because I'm still rather new to 3D.

Been contimplating for a long time whether or not I should post my work here but oh heck... please be gentle with me. LOL (I know it may not be up to par with some of the work out here)

Painted in Photoshop 7.0 and a wacom tablet, it took me roughly a day and half to complete this. The sad part was... during the process of making this, I accidently collapsed my layers and saved over it so I'm a little miffed. Perhaps the reasoning behind all the gloominess in the colors? Just kidding.

Either way I just finished this today. Not sure if I'll go back and fix things since I'm so miffed but hey, C&C would be greatly appreciated.

You come across a girl along the dark woods as she comes
up to you and says "Can I join your party?" Do you accept?

Note: I guess since this is 2 years old I'll be making a newer / better version soon. ;P Haven't been drawing in a while. Oh yeah, and BUMP! from the past.

Wow, could i have a bigger version of this? Would be great to have a poster of this!

Wow it's an excellant draw, between comics and manga heroic-fantastic art. I really like it. Nothing special to add or maybe just that the girl contrasts with the background cause she's finest, more accurate. But it's not really disturbing :)

Thank you guys :)

warhead: Bigger Version? Might be a little heavy to post in on this page but hey, I can upload it and link it when I get back from work? Thank you though, that's quite flattering if it's good enough to be posted on someone's wall. :)

nanabaky: Hehe Thanks. Yes I purposely made her a little more crisp to she can stand out in the picture. Wanted to give the background a misty feel to it as well. Although I think in some parts it's blurry because of the jpg file. Hmmm should I upload something bigger?

I love this. I wish you would have worked in 200+ DPI so it would be a fantastic printed poster. =D I would have sent you money. =D

I actually do have a 200 dpi version. It's just a tad bit heavy I figured. Wasn't sure if anyone wanted to download that. I can send you one by mail if that's what you request for?

I really like it, but her exposed eye looks weird, like it should be mencing or something?

FrizzyCube
04-11-2003, 05:08 AM
Mencing? Menacing?

I was going to work on her eyes a little more at first but then I realized I like the simple eyes since it gives her a silent & dead expression on her face. After all she's a conjerer of dead souls... but who knows? Maybe I can tweak it around a little. :)

Thank you Aeroplane. :)

Honestly, I didn't think anyone would really like my work here since everyone's so top notched.

I appreciate every little comment as it definitely pushes me more and more to do better work.

Again thank you. :applause:

Yeah, it's looks really cool. Now that I can see it in high res I can actually see individual strokes and I like it alot. I've just started coloring a 2D pic that I did the linework for about 4 - 5 years ago.

here's it is.

friction (http://www.kyphurland.com/img/full/art/friction_wip.jpg)

I'm still new to coloring in Photoshop with my wacom. I'm actualyl modeling him in 3D with muscle driven skin deformations. I screwed up my wrist last thursday and I've got this funky wrist support on and it feels like hell to draw or use a mouse (doing most of this wiht my left hand). Hopefully I will be able to take this brace off by the end of the weekend.

I really want to expand my color pallettes. I really like colors they use in the Lone Wolf 2100 (http://www.darkhorse.com/news/previews/pg_prview/sku_11455/p_0) comic books. The muted colors that are still varied look really nice and add to the atmosphere of the comic.

If you could give me some pointers it would be cool. So far all I'm using is two main colors, dodge, burn, smudge and blur tool. Any insight would be helpful.

Kyphur:

Hey I just checked your drawing out. Pretty wicked! I like your crisp linear lines. It's something definitely worth coloring in and I can see you dabbled around a bit.

Tips? Well I have plenty but it's a bit hard to fit it all in to one post but let me narrow it down to what you might be aiming for.

The overall mood color for lone wolf 2001 can be approaced in many different ways... but here's one way without having to constantly rely on a set color pallete just for the "mood". Make a layer with a specific color tone (perferablly light ), and use a combo of:

-Layers (with different opacity levels)
-Erasers (with different opacity levels)
-Burn & Dodge tool
-Hue & Saturation or.... Color Balance.

How this works is a bit similar to what I did in this particular "Dark Cloud" drawing.

Now this was originally a black/gray/white painted drawing. I simply made multiple copied layers of one particular picture. (Just drag the drawing on to the layer button)

I then applied Hue & Saturation to give one tone to each copied layer. For example one tone is orange red, and the layer above that is blue grey.

And then I just used the eraser tool (weakened the opacity for this to 50% or less) and I erased away all the necessary area so the color undeneath would seep through.

Note*: Just remember that when you want to set a certain mood to a drawing. Even the brighthest highlights and the darkest shadows should have a tint of the mood color you're aiming for.

If I'm being to vague or if I can be of any help just simply e-mail me at mail@frizzycube.com :)

P.S.: By the way I'm sorry to hear about your wrist :( I know how that is since the same thing happened to me a few months ago and I couldn't even hold a pen. Hope things get better for you.

Thanks for the compliment! :D I really wanted to color Weapon (http://www.kyphurland.com/img/full/art/weapon4web.jpg) but since I'm doing this guy for a project I decided to redo the color on him from the really old version I have of him (http://www.kyphurland.com/img/full/art/Friction1.jpg).

I'll try doing what you're talking about with the layers. I have a hard time remembering to switch layers when I'm working with colors. I'm think more like a traditional artist in that sense where there's only one canvas and it's basically one layer. I just like to go at it without thinking. Right now there's only three layers in the Friction peice I showed with the background, color and linework as layers.

Thanks for the tips and I will definantly try to put the theory into action.

BTW, do you happen to just have this as linework from before you started coloring it?

Gnowoga: Thanks Gnowga, you have no idea how much that really means to me.

kyphur: Yeah even till this day I still make mistakes drawing on to the wrong layer. Thank god for the History option though. LOL

I used to disregard layers but now, I do realize the importance of it. Not sure which version are you using but I suggest using the layer folders to keep layers from building up. :)

As for just having a linear drawing. I don't really have one for this one since I just did this as I went along from the inside out.

I started with a really rough sketch, and then I just painted it with blotches of paint starting with lights and shadows making it mildly vague.

And then I went for the lines, the details. The nooks & crannies.

Not my usual approach but this is a good method to use in the begining to give an overall balance to the mood of drawing.

Keep in touch

I'm using PS 7 and I didn't know there was a layer's folder option. I'll look into the help section on that.

So you worked with your lighting first? I started with my the base color first which is probably why I'm only pseudo-happy with it.

I'll probably continue on with how I'm doing mine and try your techniques on the next color project.

Thanks for your help and insights.

Very nice piece. I like the colors very much. :)
It could improve a little adding more dynamism. (monster's head is a little static) but the composition is fantastic.
Keep the good work!

Thank you Slime. :)

Hmmm Dynamic eh? Forgive me if I sound stupid but (LOL) but how does it look static? Do you mean turn the head around a little more? More dimension?

I guess the profile view isn't working? Just curious. Hehe

Hi FrizzyCube,

sorry for the lack of detail. I'll try to point the things that "could be better" and explain why I said it is a little static.

The overall effect is not like a snapshot of an action; the elements seems to be posing for the camera. That kind of image works better IMHO when the camera captures the action. The character is emiting some kind of energy, but the "wind" is not created in the floor at the character center, but in some point behind the feet. The character, seems to be aware of the creature, but the face have a very normal expression (perhaps you wanted to show surprise?). Also, the creature is facing the trees. In my imagination, the composition could be more dynamic if the character is turning, lower body in front position yet, but the upper quickly turning and the head in profile position, with the eyes looking behind (you could make some cool effect with the cloak), and the face of the creature approaching the camera. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well :)
There are also minor details, like the left hands, that could be better drawn, but the overal effect is great. I was only being very picky.

I love the detail of the little creature on the tree. :)

Profile view? are you refering to the monster? :p

Regards!

Daniel.

Hey, I'm browsing your page. :airguitar
you have some nice stuff there!

FrizzyCube

I see what you mean slime. :) I hear ya and I agree. It could be better in that sense.

To clarify things just a bit I meant to have the drawing translated in to what ever the viewers eyes would see. So far from many feed backs of how people saw the girl's expression I would either get....

A.Surprised
B.Dead cold expression (No emotions, which was partially what I was aiming for)
C.Scared
D.All of the above.

Some thought she was conjuring up the monster while others thought she was surprised by the monster.

Profile view? Yes, I meant the monster. Hehe

Ohh and thanks for checking out my site. I checked out your site too quite a while ago, and bookmarked it as one of my favorites.

Reading & looking through it, I can really respect one's feedback especially when it's from someone like you. Hope to keep in touch. :)

Well, i'll just throw what I think in here. The first time I looked at it I thought she was being surprised by the monster. The reason I thought that was because the classical idea of a conjurer would have to be something covered in skulls and stuff, not to say you shouldn't try to stray away from classical ideas but I feel that there isn't anything that ties the charecters together, maby you could try showing the girl commanding the monster, or a same symbol on the girl and the monster or one of those soul things wrapped around he wrist in a non threating way. All that aside the thing that realy annoys me is the glow effect by her head the color is just so tonaly simular to the rest of the image I find that the girls head just dosn't stand out as much as it could if there was more saturation in the glow (more red less white orange).

I like the wind blast and the soul monster.

Don
