Hi I have just made a car in 3D Max 5 and now want to texture it.
I want the car to have a 2 tone paint job like the TVR's. Blue/Green sort of thing. But I have no idea how to make it.

Does anyone now how to make that sort of realistc car paint.

Thanks

Karl

i just started doing or at least trying to do what you did but it didnt turn out quite exactly as i wanted it to. The tutorial doesnt go in at all in the cellular map thingy and on my "carpaint" you can see the small cells which looks like cracked rocks in a lava field(lol)

here's how it looks...i'll up a picture of the material borwser in a couple of minutes(too big for the board) and i'll show it to ya.

I could not see any spots at all in your material, Buggy. Is supersampling on? Have you tried different sizes on the spots (cellular map)?

And i don't find the HDRI info either ;-). It does support HDRI, but not very good, and there are no info in the help file on how to use them. And i can't get them to work properly, only manage to load them.

the cellular map is there...its just that i made it small so when you have a close up you'll see it...

i'll take some other pics tomorrow...

god..i need someone to "stich" my UVW unwrap maps together....i cant get anythign going(its for a plane thingy)...

i'll work more with the paint tomorrow...so far i love the red and blue colors...green isnt too shabby either.:)

this is more of an experience exercise for me..like mixing all materials and stuff...i'm not quite used to all of that yet..thats why i'm trying it the hard way...otherwise i can get whatever app is needed but it wont be as hard (probably)...

i got a decent color anyways...i'll work on it later today...now i'm still working on UVW's for a plane..hehe

On the HDRI thing, I do infact belive MAX handles that quite nicely. Only it doesn't do the HDRI magic through use of the new .hdr format, instead MAX now nativly supports 16-bit TIFF (er.. or was it Targa..) images. Same results, different format.

By putting such an image into the new Skylight light and activating the Light Tracer lighting-module you can get some niiiice results pretty quickly.

You can convert .hdr images to 16-bit TIFF(/Targa). You do that by..
..uh..
using a program called HDRShop I think. Finding that is a job for google.

Here is a two tone car paint I made about two months ago for a personal project.

There are five different car paint materials in the attached material library file.
Feel free to use them and make any changes you want.

Enjoy :)

I have tried that process before, but i only got a lot of noise in the render no matter how many rays i used. But when using a standard bitmap it generated a nice picture (No HDRI though). It would be very nice of u if you could post a tutorial or a simple max file that is working, cause i gave up on HDRI lighting in max after a few days of testing.

Thanks for the help guys!
