View Full Version : 3D Hello World
TwinSnakes 10-19-2007, 02:38 PM Hey, I'm learning blender and I'm trying to do the 3D 'Hello World' equiv. a shiny sphere on a checkerboard plane.
I can do everything except create the freaking checkerboard pattern.
Can anyone help?

(1) Press the [SPACEBAR] and look through the menus.
(2) Here are some tutorial links:
http://www.blender.org/tutorials-help/tutorials/
http://blendernewbies.blogspot.com/
http://www.blendernation.com/tutorials/
Those should get you started. Welcome to the awesome world of Blender3D :)
edit: ack! sorry, I somehow thought you were stuck at trying to add the sphere. I hope you'll enjoy the tutorials in any event, since there are some there that deal with materials and textures.
do you want to make the checkerboard pattern with protcedurals?

You have three options (that I know of):
1) Make a checkerboard pattern in GIMP or Photoshop, then apply it to the texture channel for your plane's material by going to Either F5 (materials menu) or F6 (textures menu) and click on one of the stack of rectangles if you don't have a texture channel yet, then click on Add New and choose Image. In the right most panel of the F6 texture menu, you can click on the Load button, OR if you already have a texture image in the UV editor, you can click on the little triangle next to the Load button to select it from a list.
Now go to the F5 menu and click on the Map Input tab, and click UV to make the texture fits the UV in the UV editor. In the Map To panel (read carefully) make sure the texture is applied to the "Col" (colour) channel.
2) Select the plane, enter UV face select mode (F in object mode), then select all the faces by pressing A > A (A twice). Now split the 3D viewport into two views and make one of them into a UV editor by putting your mouse in one of them and pressing Shift + F10.
In the UV editor, click on New > Image. When a pop up menu comes up, click on the UV test grid button and you can set any dimension you want. Once you're done click on OK, you should see a checkerboard pattern in your UV editor with rainbow plus signs inside the squares.
What you need to do then to make sure the UV map appears on your mesh when you render is to apply the checkerboard pattern to your mesh like in step one.
3) Third way is using procedural. I've tried this method and it didn't came out well for me. I don't remember how to do it as a consequence.
Maybe one of the other guys can fill you in on it.

Yes with procedurals.
hmm.. well there's a custom (http://www.graphicall.org/builds/builds/showbuild.php?action=show&id=515)('tiles') (http://www.graphicall.org/builds/builds/showbuild.php?action=show&id=515) build (http://www.graphicall.org/builds/builds/showbuild.php?action=show&id=515) with a procedural for tiles to be found at graphicall.org (http://www.graphicall.org) that has a as of yet non-official tiles patch compiled into it.. :)

Do you mean the one shown in the Release Log for 2.43?

You can use a wood texture and material nodes to create a checkers texture.
