Hi

These are the fist matte paintings I've made and would like to get some feedback. Maybe some tips how to improve it, any mistake I've made, what I made good, ...
Any comment or review would be helpful, because I really want to improve my style.

Hi Birgit,

I like 2,3 and 1 in that order. number 5 isn't really a matte painting and 4 i can't quite read what's going on.

In reference to 2,3,1 they look very nice, a number of issues relating to perspective but the colour palettes work very well and the composition leads the eye in the right direction. I'd be tempted to add more dynamic lighting, clouds etc, especially number 1, you seem to like sunny scenes which makes me wonder if this is a positive weakness :) get a little mood in there.

Could you breakdown number 2? is this photo work and paint?

Good stuff :)

hey, welcome, and nice start in matte painting, I'm sure you will learn tons of techniques here sharing your art
my favorite would be number 1 , I like the concept and execution, the idea is really cool and it reminds me a bit to the traditional matte paintings done in the 60's
the soecond one looks good too but when you eyes folows the road the big tree breaks the flow, killing detail there in the background of hidding it totally
in the third one the street bricks looks out of scale, too big to me
the 4th looks more like a book ilustration than a matte painitng, it needs a lot of improvement in linear perspective, color, depth, mood and lighting
the 5th has a nice start with your color palette , , is that a roller coaster under the sea?? it need more elements in the background and foreground
well done and keep posting more !

Hi

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I appreciate your comments and will work on it, butI will not find the time to show making-of shots, or give explanations till friday. I'm just finishing my diploma thesis till then.
So, please excuse me if I reply later.

cheers, birgit

cool, I agree 5 doesnt seem like a matte. The others all have a lot of strong things going on with them though. Your atmosphere seems nice, the values match up as they go back in space, for the most part it feels like they are 'solid' environments. But there is this slightly off scale to a lot of things, and some things just dont seem very 'natural' so it makes them feel very mysterious and sureal. Like a Dali painting.

Depending on the project this may be just what your going for, but I think if your trying to make things look 'real' they are not quite there. right now they just look good and interesting.

:) youve got a lot of the princepals down, its just a matter of what your accomplishing with the piece. hope to see more soon!
