View Full Version : C++ Development for Maya / .NET for Max - VS on same partition?

Hi guys,

I am planning to start developing a few small custom tools to use within Max and Maya - in C++ for Maya and .NET (C#) for Max.

I last loaded VS2005 about a year ago on another system, and I vaguely remember that once it was installed it slowed my system down (whether that was because it was running a lot of background services or not I don't know).

Is it a particularly bad idea to install VS2005 on a production workstation that is mainly used for modelling and animation? I realise the partition it is on has to have Max + Maya installed so one can test things out, but it seems overkill to have a specific "development" partition (given that I am a one man operation)...

...unless it really will slow down Windows on that system?

Thanks!

Martin

I haven't installed VS in many years but if it is like most Microsoft products, you can turn off about 3/4 of those services on your own. I turn off half the default Windows services as it is.

Hi,

We have on each computer 3DSMax, Maya and VS 2005 and nothing is slowing down...
No services from VS2005 are running (as far as we know) but it may come from you machine that is slow or the antivirus.
We use Pentium Dual core hyperthreaded with 2Gb of RAM and GeForce 8800, so it may be possible that any slowing down is invisible :-)

I've got

max 7,8,9,2008 +
maya 6.0,6.5,7.0,8.0,8.5,2008 +
Xsi 5.0,6.0,6.5 +
motionbuilder 7.0,7.5 +
endorphin (about 10 dev and release versions) +
morpheme (about 10 dev and release versions) +
houdini +
visual C++ 2003, 2005

all installed side by side on a single partition. I've never noticed any slowdowns.... I can't envisage any problems (unless you have a single core machine and are trying to run more than one app at a time).

Fair enough! Thank you :-)

No I'm on Quad Core 6600 with 4GB RAM... So that should be fine.

Thanks!

Haha! Yes I seem to remember downloading it when it was first released and it took ages...
