Could someone point me in the right direction for creating nice 3d sunsets? I have seen many with beautiful purple sky's etc. So how do i create these? What is the best software to use?

I am only in my 2nd year of a Digital Art degree and have not done much 3d work as yet so any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks...

Bryce would be a fairly inexpensive option - but at some point I imagine you'll want to do more than just sunsets, so you may want to consider what else you'd like to create - then compare XSI, Max, LightWave, Maya, etc...

Hi,

thank you for the advice and information. Yes I would like to, and with my course, will be moving on to projects a bit more advanced as well as animation. The software of choice at my university is Maya, therefore this would probably be my best option I think. I can also get access to Maya 5 days a week so it would save me having to spend large amounts of money on something I am still unsure of at the moment.

I am also a keen landscape photographer, so on a personal level I would like to go on to creating landscapes etc and hopefully one day on to buildings etc as well. I have seen some unbelievable images of old churches etc with fantastic lighting that I would just love to photograph.... and then I find out that it was created with 3d software! This is something I would dream of doing in the future which is why I think it would be best to stick to a sunset for just now!

Since I am saving on software for the time being I am going to buy a video tutorial for maya. However, on doing a bit of research, I find there are SO many! I am thinking of just the "Intro to Maya" would be the best option for now. But will this cover a sunset scene type of tutorial? Or at least give me the knowledge to then create this myself? I know I am saving on not having to buy software, but being a student I also do not want to waste money! Can anyone suggest where I can find a walkthrough tut on creating a sunset in Maya? Google for once does not seem to be helping me!
