is there a deformer in maya that will "squash" things like your characters fingers when it closes on an object.
one that is built in or do you have to do some jerry rigging.

huh. what does that do.
sorry but I am not into animation and other things like that yet. I am almost done with my first char model and will then rig it and stuff.

Well, it just squashes your object.
It is under deform > create nonlinear > squash.
Just play and see what it does.

Put a wrap-deformer (same shape) around the object being gripped by fingers.
Then, (for the sake of argument let's assume your character is gripping a small rock), parent the wrap-object to the 'rock'.
FIRST select the hand (or seperate fingers one by one, if NURBS patches) and LAST, select the wrap-object....
Then hit 'F2' on the keyboard (animation) and go:
Deform --> create wrap:
Tweak and test as necessary in att.Ed. (Gradually is best, starting from zero!)

cool. sounds fun. but how do I make the wrap object the same shape as the contact object. and is it supposed to be the exact same size or is it supposed to be a little bigger.

You can try using a Lattice aswell.
I wouldn't recommend using the Squash deformer for something like fingers.....just too hard to control
