View Full Version : HMC #11: Bump in the night Monster
Splashmatt 10-16-2007, 09:23 AM hey all,
Thought I'd put myself up for this challlenge as the timing is perfect for me to test out Modo 301's sculpting abilities. I'll be bringing to life this little character

Taken from Gary Bedell's lovely concept sketch

Ill PM Gary to see if he has any more ideas for the rest of the monster and as stated before, ill be using Modo's new sculpting tools to see what I can make.

The company I work for recently purchased Zbrush and for the last month I've been learning to love that program. At the same time, modo 301 came out with sculpting tools included. For me this last month has been one giant sculpting lesson. Unfortunately now I find myself comparing modo to zbrush. But anyway

So this here charts my first tentative steps into Modo sculpting. I had previously played with the tools to get a feel for them but this challenge will be the first project I do. For simple box deformation the tools are great, but I found that when things started to get a bit complex, modo wasn't handling things too well. Symmetry, for instance, seems to fall apart after a few strokes. On the image above, the step between the 4th and 5th instance required me to go back to some good old modeling techniques.
Lastly, I tried pushing the poly count of the object into the 100,000s and found the program sluggish. It may be my system (dual core g5 2.5ghz Mac, 3gb Ram.) Tonight I'll be trying image based deformations to see if it fares any better.

as the title suggests, my plan isnt going too well. Unless I can find some magic button that will take away cursor freezes, broken geometry and craggy surfacing, Ill be giving up on Modo's image based sculpting and taking it into zbrush. Have been scouring the web for answers but all I find is similar stories. Will try some more tonight but I dont really hold any hope for it working.

Hey,
after a few late starts, and a change from using modo to zbrush, I have my first sculpted update. First the revised mesh :

Then the sculpt :

I'm having to steal moments at work to do this, I'll try to get some better pics up tomorrow afternoon. At the moment, he's looking a bit like slimer from Ghostbustser, will work on this.

Redo 3!

Having originally planned on using Modo's sculpting tools for this project, but then finding them not working on my system, I changed direction midstream and started sculpting in zbrush. Having not given up on Modo, I upgraded to Leopard last week and was joyed that the I could finally sculpt in Modo. So now I have changed again, I will once again be doing everything in Modo and here is my model ready to sculpt (and imaged based sculpting at that.)
Watch this space.

So moving ahead with my plan to use and learn Modo for not just modeling but sculpting as well, I've had to go through a alot of different versions to get to the point where I could get enough detail into the model via image based modeling. I still have some bumps to iron out but I think he's starting to get somewhere, at last.

Hehe I dig the intrails and the mouth is comming along really nicely. It kinda reminds me of that funny little green ghost from Ghost Busters. Neat so far. I'd love to see animation with this thing dragging itself along the ground, with guts and everything hanging from it :)

Thanks Yoroba,
I get the green ghost thing from ghostbusters as well. His name was Slimer. Time permitting, I hope to have my monster pulling himself out of a toxic waste barrel. This I take from Return of the Living Dead Part 2.
Love my 80's flicks.

For anyone who's keeping track, I managed to get sculpting to work in modo, but to get the some depth to the details i ended up using about 5 different UV maps. Modo is suffering again, and even with an extra 2 Gb Ram added, it simply will not handle more than one vertex displacement map at a time. Sooooo, Im moving all my UV's onto one map, with a subsequent drop in detail expected (this is because the combination of my comp and modo doesnt seem to like maps above 2k.)
But I'm still dedicated to making this project work and I expect to have something tangible come friday, its just not going to be what I hoped it would be.
Maybe next challenge, with better planning, I'll be in the competition for real.

Reprint of finished thread
Name: Matthew Moss
Concept: Gary Bedell

Software: Modo
Tired and frustrated, I couldn't leverage Modo to do what I had planned. Sculpting had to be scaled back and not refined due to constantly crashing comp. Luckily the texturing went alot smoother (or I wouldn't be posting this here.) Please bear in mind that this model uses image based deformations, therefore the wireframe versions don't show the intricate details such as if I had modeled it in Zbrush. There are some amazing works in this thread already and I have no hope of winning but at least I managed to get my model in this time. Thanks everyone.
