This is our entry for the challenge on www.cgchallenge.com.
This document will show and tell how the project takes shape.
First of all, we needed a bagground plate, and since a quick little roadtrip is always welcome, we went "on location". In Denmark there are no canoyns and few cliffs, but we managed to take some decent shots with a CANON G2 camera of a beautiful place called "Moen's Klint".
The next thing was to decide wich photo to use and what the basic concept should be.

Pretty nice plate
The idea became to create an almost cartoonish but still "creepy" setting. A mix between "Mars Attacks", and "City of Lost Children".
This way we could have dark interiors and rusty bolts and knobs, and still maintain a funny feel.
The "hover" was made in 3dsmax.
click on link below. 0.7 megs. Divx.
Camera projection adds greatly to both mood and realism and there are some pretty amazing camera mappings among the other entries, so we quickly decided to go with the flow and have the camera animate. The clip is the first attempt - in the final clip the geometry will be improved and the different layers will be properly masked in compositing.
The hover was used to setup lighting. Colors and intensities were tweaked, until the camera projected plate and the cg hover appeared to exist in the same space. We felt the "look" hit the mark, and continued to refine the "outpost" based on a pair of hopelessly lame concept sketches:-)
It's done. Check out the animation. (http://www.specialdeffects.com/sdfx_outpost_panic_final.mov)
It's been very fun and educating, but as with any "final" thing you do, there are a million things you would like to do otherwise.
We'll probably do an extended version in the near future so check out www.specialdeffects.com once in a while if you're interested. In the next challenge we hope to post more frequently, but thank you all for your comments and good luck to the other participants!
