Very nice start man , he'll be an interesting character , I think you should post that pre-wacom sketch of yours so everyone can get an idea where this character is going ;)

Awesome work. Great muzzle and head shape. although the ears seem too narrow at the base.
Making them more triangular would give a more cat-like impression. right now, those are leaning toward wallaby-style ears.
No offense but he appears to have a bit of a snout to him..making him look more dog like than cat..just my thoughts

hmm didnt get much done today...did to much chatting/chores...
but I am working on the dog-cat stuff I agree its way to dog like... no offense taken, I totally agree

Looking much more catlike now
You could perhaps make his muzzle slightly narrower on the x-axis, but it's not a major necessity :)
The ears look much better too now, btw ;)
Give the poor guy some teeth now!!

Looks cool so far, Mob- and since he's a cat-hybrid from the ice-age, you could texture him like a Siberian tiger (the biggest of the cats).

Coming along nicely, looks very cat/badass now..the base idea makes me think of a race from an old alan dean foster book..look forward to seeing the finished product..
The glove design is cool too, though it seems like it would make more sense to have the claws/spikes facing the opposite way..or maybe they have claws of their own, could put vents in and have them slip out like wolverine? Just a thought.
Also, is that a neutral or angry morph target? Looks pretty po'd. If it's angry, might be cool to have the ears flatten back :)

hey guys umm..I been a jerk and took yesterday off but started working on him today again hehe...
time for the q and a portion of our thread hehe
grub: yeah decided to go with toes, actually in the update youc an see the rough geom laid out...no detailing yet, just workin on proportions etc
crash: good to see you man! hows the tank? hehe you would do fine with organics..your mechanics always rock! I have been saving my steps as best I can and will post them on my site...not really a tut or anything (im far from qualified to tell anyone how to do much)
strick9: yes I think I will use maya fur for this...only done afew tests with it..so this will be interesting for sure  thanks for the comments man!
willem: yeah I agree he has kind of "d'uh hey guyz" face right now (aka dumb) I am planning on revisiting a few parts of that soon, but also hes in a semi neutral face now, and the eyes arent helping lol. thanks man

This is excelent stuff!
I wish I could create sutch excelent characters with wings.
That's exacly the kind of legs I was talking about (with some big, sharp claws alright :D ). I know its a little cliché, but I think fits the character perfectly, but of course the last word belongs to the creator right KingMob? ;)
Thanks for this post, because you are showing us what can be done with wings and that is a great inspiration :applause: :buttrock:

P.S.: Is he going to have a tail?

"...he's looking a but dumb (no offence) for a warrior. "
Sorry, got a chuckle from this comment. Most warriors were not known for their superior intellects. :)
Nice model going there though. I'm not sure why, but this makes the word "Thunder Cats!" come to my mind.
I have to agree with you that the ears sort of make me think of "cute", not dangerous. Possibly give them more of a ragged appearance. Make them a little longer and drooping a little.
Can't wait to see it textured.
Nice going Mobster.
I think you might want to suck a few steroids from his shoulders considering the skinny limbs he has.
Can't wait to see you try the fur. I have never used Maya and I don't know what Maya fur is capable of but it'd be great if you managed to get that mangy look you have in the sketch

Working on getting the feet done..then the hands.. then tweaking him a lot. then the clothes which will be fun... and so on...
should be able to get hiim close to done this week

Nice, nice muscle definition, nice head (ears ain't finished? maybe you could do something more with them). Not sure bout proportions though. Maybe you should make him a bit longer? Longer legs and/or bigger feet? Also the claws/hands could be bigger I think, would make him more of a warrior. Anyways the waist seem wrong, to fat I suppose (and cats are slender creatures). I tried to make clear with a picture. Keep it going! going to look great when finished ;) Do u have sketch of his outfit or something?
KingMob
04-23-2003, 06:35 PM
Another update reworked a lot of stuff..still far from being done
keyt hings I know to fix
1. detail ears heh
2. forarms and hands are really not at all finished just blocked out
3. detail legs and lower stomach
4. back and tail..make it look more natural
6. gonna make him a little more hunched and cat like, and such. adn then tweak a lot of him
Thanks for allt he feedback guys!, and roman, yeah I think I will do something close to that...tho its a bit narow I like the idea..good call...and yeah Ill post some outfit sketches soon.

So much detail with wings :D
How much is the polycount now? My pc would be crawling editing this babe for sure!

Best regards.
KingMob
04-24-2003, 03:24 PM
hey guys thanks for the feedback! always appreciated.
I totally agree about the abs..im gonna remove all those edges and relay the loops cause its for sure the sloppiest part (started out nice to haha)
poly count isnot bad at all really just broke 6200 polies with hes eyes and teeth (which are all temp)
On a side note I have TOTALLY changed this character's motif...in drawing costume ideas I started really getting away from mediel/ninja style into something else...which should be a lot of fun to play with, I'll post concepts soon.
here's the wires btw...has a few non planar and tri's bt thats cause hes a wip...they will leave (well maybe a few choice tri's will stay.)

nice going! it's looking really good! the only thing i don't think looks right is the way his snout points downward at such a steep angle.
i did a model pretty similar to this about two weeks ago, though mines much more stylized and a bit more human like as far as muscles go. you can check it out at:

ill_logic:
Hey neat model man...Makes me even more glad im switching the 'style' of his motif to soemthing new... Yeah the angle is a bit extreme but In looking at a ton of cat pics that seemed pretty common in most mid-sized cats and such... I may end up bringing it up some more, cause I have been thinking that as well.
Hope you don't think I was takin yer idea, I had not seen it before... tho a think a lot of people are doing cat people haha.
well anyways back to work I go to fix him up

i started this a couple weeks ago when i realized i didn't have any interesting creature type of models to show off. i only showed the model to friends & family.

By looking at the wire you posted I can now imagine the ammount of work you've been putting into this char.
Congratulation.
I am doing a simple FISH in wings and am banguing my head with the decisions I have to make on how I'm modelling it (should I extrude there or lift? Mabe I can inset and them move it out. Naaah I better bevel it instead) :banghead:

King,
Looking good.
If you have some time I would like to ask you about Wings. I know you use Maya correct?. I am mainly wondering how the transition to Wings was from Maya. I played with wings briefly and it seems like such an awesome modeller. I am considering using it for my next project. I guess mainly I am wondering is it easy to go back and forth between Maya, and Wings say for example I want to convert my mesh to Sub-D from a wings model. Do the meshes translate well over to Maya and vice versa?
Thanks!

hey thanks guys, really appreciate the support!
jp:
just do what looks best...and dont be afraid to redo it, just save backsups in case things go awry!
Zero:
Thanks man, you also rox0r!
strick9:
Man wings and maya work together like peanut butter and jelly.. wings models are really clean, nice normals etc, VERY easy to go back and forth (save as OBJ) I am actually doing a lot of detailing in maya cause wings doesnt have a nice split poly toolset eright now, but for getting rough forms its unbeatable in my opinion...
ANd yeah, anything in maya can be saved as OBJ and easily imported (export selection and make sure you have the OBJ plug in turned on.)
but basically its a breeze...only problem i have had is when saving wings models to obj with a number name, it goes a little odd...tho thats not really even an issue.
I should have a new update by this evening, thanks for all the support and critiques once again, it really helps motivate me!

This is coming along really nicely. I love the mechanic idea especially the large wrench. It reminds me of an RPG character that would use the wrench as a weapon during a fight.
I got a question for ya or anybody who may know the answer. When you add clothes after the base model of the body, are they seperate objects, or part of the base mesh.
BTW thanks for answering my Wings questions. I look foward to implementing it into my workflow.

Comin along nicely Kin' Mob he
i would suggest u follow ur sketch it looks excellent
one thing i didn't like was that the 3d head doesn't have the same humanly appearence as the sketch.
I believe that is because teh nose and mouth of the 3d are too long, shorten them, bring them closer to the eyes. and the 3d ears aren't as pointy as teh 2d and some other details that make the 2d better.
KingMob

Looking fantastic Ian. I dont think I've ever seen anyone pick up modeling so fast. Good character design as well. When you're done, you should contact the creators of wings and get it posted in thier gallery.
I hope you decide to animate him!

sweet!
I did not read all comments, but will he get whiskers? Most cats used to have some longer hairs around their nose.
Top modelling, I like the direction you've taken him, and your sketch could have held it's own in the 2D Art section, King. :buttrock:

Your character is so cool. Also, I really like that you noted other things as a side bar like bios in the development of character.
One thing I think could be a little more unique is the head piece or Pilot hat. I think you could probably be something a little more relative to his cat culture. I think it's just a bit done. Some more of head dress from his civilization. I think his uniform will still be in sync even if the head piece departs a bit. That's just my outlook tho.
I totally like the work and hope to do something with the same physique. You really have it worked out very well.

Hey guys, I just wanted to post an update, and let you know kitty is not dead, I just took a break to do a few models/try and drum up freelance(ugh)....
I recently began using clay pretty extensivly and it has changed how I model a lot, so I wanted to go and revisit him and fix up the areas I always felt were lacking..
His hands are wip, and soon will have gloves, and so forth.
Thanks again to EVERYONE for the nice words and such. And please let me know what you think so far,

Awesome work.
I do think he needs longer teeth and whiskers though. :)
Why do you model in Wings 3D if you have Maya? J/k.

in the earlier renders, i noticed that the tail, wasn't really on the tail bone, instead more like a few inches from it
could you post a full frontal and rear view, just to see how it looks in clothes, but it did strike me as lookin kinda funny, it should be lower in my eyes

Interesting, apparently everyone who's joined in the past month is a thread necromancer. This is like the 15th one I've seen. (They must be looking at the gallery)
Anyway, still looking good, King Mob! ;)

hey man, great work!! love the character design, especially the clothes, and the wrinkles. Btw, how are you planning on animating the clothing? i mean, converting it to maya cloth, or binding directly, or softbodies?
