Hey everyone,

I am using 8.5 unlimited on a brand new 15in' MacBook Pro, 2.4Ghz, 2GB ram, GeForce 8600 GT 256MB, and every time I try to do a batch render, it will stall and then crash. Everything else seems to work fine. I can batch render short segments, as well as single frames, but once I start moving beyond 2 or 3 second long pieces, I get this error. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks in advance.

I apologize if this topic has been discussed before, I tried a search but got an error.

what is the error message?
what renderer are you using?

Are your rendering to an image sequence? (don't render to QuickTime or AVI)

Tfritzsche, I am getting the general OS X, something has gone wrong but we're not going to tell you what so the program will have to close, crash message. You know, the completely useless one. I am using the maya software renderer. It doesn't seem to matter what settings I am using. Even if I have raytracing off, it still crashes.

Danylyon, I am rendering to an image sequence. The first time I tried to batch render, I went straight to quicktime, and when it crashed, I figured this was the cause of the error, but unfortunately it crashes during image sequences as well.

I know of several others that run on older macbook pros, with far less specs than I am running, so I know it can't be a macbook pro specs specific problem. I do not seem to have any other issues within maya itself. It appears to be a batch render problem. Right now I am working with smaller concept animation using mostly polygon primitives, but once I get into some more intense work, this will obviously be a problem. I can render out a single frame fine, as well as shorter sequences, so I know the computer can render. However, the whole thing is useless if I can not use it beyond this very primitive nature. I know that maya's rendering capabilities are not the greatest, and I plan on moving to renderman at some point, but I want to figure out the issue here first, as it may show itself to be a deeper problem later on. Right now I am completely stumped, and not too happy, as I purchased this laptop specifically to be able to have a mobile 3D workspace. Obviously Maya software is not cheap either. Let me know what you think. This is quite frustraiting.

Sounds really weird.
Does this happen with every scene?
Does this happen if you use mental ray?

If both yes.. I would try to reinstall Maya. (delete preferences / folderstructure plugins.. etc). Maybe something went wonky there. If you've got the chance try other maya versions. A Service Pack maybe?

I'm not too sure about OSX, but on a PC I would start to guess RAM or Overheating issues. Can you make some basic ramcheck on a Mac?

are you using 8.5 pre-intel, or 8.5 universal binary? you should be able to tell by doing a "get info" on the app. i'm not sure if they even make a pre-intel version of 8.5, but if they do and you're using it, that could be the reason.

aside from that, all i can think of is process of elimination. try sending it off with all your materials and their nodes deleted and a gray lambert on everything. try deleting all the lights and using default lighting. try using a draft preset in the render settings. also, does anything significant change in the scene around the time it crashes? does it always crash on the same frame? have you had any similar problems using any other apps on your machine?
