Running in windows, linux, or sgi?
If windows 2000/xp, try to describe what's on your scene.... maybe someone will help....

maya 4.0 is running under
winnt 2k
pentium 4 2.4
1 gig of ram
- the harddrive is not fragmented, so it shouldn't get stuck because of that
the scene is fairly dense 2 million faces, but that's not what causes the problem, because i've worked with denser scenes before.
this is something that happens randomly (or at least it seems like it)

It's hard to say what the problem is but you probably have a lot of garbage in the scene from modelling histories that are not getting parsed correctly when saving.
Try exporting you model as a DXF to clean it up.
Trust me this is okay to do wether you model is nurbs or polygonal.. Maya actuall exports nurbs data correctly to DXF and cleans out anything that is not legit.

Also make absolutely sure Maya has crashed. Many times I didn't give Maya credit but it's really just crunching fat numbers. Occasionally, depending on what you do in a scene, a save can take extremely long, happens to me on scenes that reference alot of stuff sometimes.

I was assuming he meant that the program exited but based on my earlier assumpption that there could be alot of garbage in the file that the extra memory it is using is causing the long file save.
Also if you have infinite undo turned on and you are doing poly modelling you will at up all your ram in a hurry and most fo the times when I have a crash it wil be after not saving for way too long.
How big is the file in question?

That happened to me when I tried to save a scene file to a read only directory....whoops..never make that mistake again.
Probably though it is exactly what Gmask was saying, but it could be alot of things.

I have had maya do that to me a few times, and it was usually when the scene was large, and I was running programs in the background. I have a machine about as good as your setup, not as much ram tho. If my machine is doing a lot at the time I try to do save-as, maya crashes and exits.

my models don't have history
- i only have 20 undos turned on
- i don't have other major applications open
the only issue with the dxf is that it doesn't keep any shaders.etc
thanks for your suggestions anyway
my best solution so far is to just rename the original file and just sve normally in maya.
still scared to save as.

That is true but dependiong on how and wahat is being modelled you wouldn't be working on shaders for it at the same time.

Hmm.. so if you save it's okay but save as fails? That is odd?
are you saving as ascii .ma or binary .mb?
