Title: R&D_PREVIZ_TATTOO PROJECT
Name: Loïc e338 Zimmermann
Country: France
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush
Hi folks.
Long time no post...
So, what is it that you're looking at?
The answer is, a mish mash of R&D, Previz, and personnal experimentations on a subject that doesn't really is, well - you might say - my cup of tea. Realism !
I've prepared a long speech on this stuff, i just wait for the thread to be validated to post it.
Quickly, this is previz of a tattoo that I designed for me. Tho this is CG, i'm actually doing the tattoo for real. Stay plugged.
Kudos.

Same pict in Highres (http://www.e338.com/downloads/def_top_1600.jpg)
I've been thinking of having a tattoo for years and years now. Obviously I wanted to draw it by myself and I recently felt like I was ready for that.
As soon as i found a crazy guy capable (technicaly) of doing something really precise, I started the design process. We also discused the way we'd work together. I asked the man about placement, tricky areas, streches, etc...
Very early in this process, I decided I'd use what I know in CG for placement, simulation, and later on, unfold and generation of the final layout in 2D. I explained him my vision of the process, and although he was confused about what I was talking, we both agreed it was a freakin' cool idea! Eh !
Since I wanted to do something really precise regarding the anatomy, I felt I could use a little help in order to be as close as possible to the reality.
My work at the moment consists in doing characters for a videoGame company, Quantic Dream, and to do so, after the casting is done, we use 3D scanners of the faces as a guideline for the modelling process.
I asked my fella Thierry, character supervisor there, if we could manage a scan session of my body and he said yeah ( I told you he's cool right?).
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/tattooWip_01scan.jpg
Using these patches of scan, i rebuilt the entire mesh and then i created a neat geometry on top.
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/tattooWip_02scan.jpg
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/tattooWip_03rebuild.jpg
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/tattooWip_04rebuild.jpg
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/tattooWip_05coverage.jpg
After a month, I came back to Arnaud, the tattoo artist, with the design, and a rough preview in 3D to see what the placement was. He started to cry, considering the amount of work he'd have to go through. then he said to me how long it might take, and it was my turn to cry.
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/wip_design.jpg
He drew a simplier version of it (the main lines), and he printed patches of carbon paper to do the placement before starting the butcher work.
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/wip_carbon.jpg
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/wip_carbon2.jpg
The first session was a tough call, since he had to do the lines in one shot. I spent around 4.5h on the chair.
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/wip_torture.jpg
I go there regularly to fill the stuff with black ink. When this first pass will be achieved, we'll do the same with the grey ink.
I could have stopped here, but i felt it was about freaking time to do a proper render to see how this would really look in the end. Realism isn't a motivation and/or a goal for me. I always use 3D as a starting point for illustration, and this whole texturing/shading stuff is a pain in the ass to me, although, I confess, it can be exciting (what if i was a masochist in the end??? Neh! I can't be ! ).
I used zbrush 3 to create the highres geometry.
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/wip_Zbrush_shaded_blog.jpg
http://loic.zimmermann.club.fr/blog/images/wip/tattoo/wip_Zbrush_texturingWeb.jpg
I felt it could be good for me to have something to show in this particular field, so I did my best to push the render as far as I could.
The textures are not really highres, far from that. Except the bump and displacement, which are 4k, the rest was done in 2K only (for the face AND the body).
Rendering was done in Maya, with SSS, MentalRay, blahblah.. the basic stuff. I did a bit of FUR (gosh I hate that) as well.
I think this is all very close to the reality, I didn't try to improve the real me though CG. This is my head, my shrimp body... Damn !
Hope you'll enjoy... the process, the design, whatever.
Next stage is not in my hands at the moment. A friend of mine, very talented character rigger at Framestore, is currently working on a skeletton, rig, and muscle simulation, so I can finally manage an animation and a reel.
Eyes are closed, yup ! Felt like it was OK at this stage to let them stay this way. I'll work on it for the animation but for now i'm done.
Back to illustration. Back to silkscreen. No more 3D nitpicking appart from the job. hahaha.
Cheers to you all.

Amazing! And I'm talking both about the realism, and the tattoo design!
But, in the rendering, I think the tatoo itself needs to be first slightly blurred (due to colorbleeding in the dermis), then slightly bluish, and finally less black. Yes I know a fresh tattoo can be really dark, and if you prefer it that way, then keep it.

It must be somewhat freaky to see yourself in 3d like that! That is such a vivid image it is mind blowing.
It would be neat if you did a short movie render where the camera spins around the model. But I think the long rendering times would make it almost not worth it.
It is one of the best images I have seen!
Cheers :D

WOw! Truley fascinating and a very inspiring read! sounds like you have some very cool frineds and contacts. Well done on your work, everything is awesome. Design, execution and render!
Well done, cant wait to see the whole real model rigged. One of the most realistic pieces to date. What you have achieved is 'ART' and one of the hardest thing's technicaly to do. I hope you dont get any trolls or bashing for you work.
This more than anything truly deserves front page and an award!
Excellendt work dude!

Mr Loic,
very, very cool (as I told you many times already). I wonder if anybody ever put so much work into a tattou - but it sure payed off ;). Can't wait to see the finsihed CG and real version!!

dude? where do you get to use a 3d scanner? and could you explain more of how you arrived at the current mesh from the scanned patches?
wow, this is just unbelivable work , totally photorealistic :buttrock:
yo bro. :D
i have to say, kick ass tattoo design. really impressive.
what can i say about 3d image.. hmm .. looks like you, but with less hairs :)
and im not sure, but i think so you improve a bit, your muscles in 3d :D
i like the making off :) its really cool to see 3d and later you with the tears in your eyes and butcher behind you :D
its cool idea to designe/prototype your self in 3d :) do you have in mind some further mods? iplants? metal parts, hydraulics ? maybe some "intel inside"?? :D :D
great job masta LOIC :)

This is some crazy stuff right here!
Great work! :D
Well. Cool feedback so far.
Svenjorjensen. Thx.
Raul-Reznek : thanks killerman. Yeah, scans. It’s such a cool ref to have. Well, once you have one in your hands it’s ok to decline to anykind of character. But still…
Minminxu: thanks to you. Background is basically the tattoo itself. I may post it later on.
Butsa: Thanks. I’m still wondering if I’ll share the design in the end. May be cropped or in low res (1k max). I’m a bit paranoid on this. Eh!!! Don’t pay attention and keep looking to the thread J for a potential update on this particular point.
Fluvirus, Pepius, Swag, Neni: thanks to you all. Glad you like both the 3D, and the tattoo design.
Scrimski. Do you mean you have one and you want to make another one as well?
Mamali132002, frebell: thanks.
HocusPocus, Litterz: I keep your stars. Thanks men.
Stahlberg: wooo! Look who’s there ! Thanks sir. Regarding the tattoo you’re perfectly right. I can see it happening in the real life, it’s really dark first, then shitty, then it fades, then the brand new skin appears, then it’s getting darker again, but not black indeed. The blueish effect does appear, but only after a year or so. For the CG version I wanted it… brand new J . Anyway. Glad you like it.
(it’s the second time we work on the same project and still, we haven’t met yet. What are we waiting? Hahaha)
Moonraker808: Yeah, that’s a bit freaky but I think it’s even more for my friends. You’re never really objective when it comes to yourself. Like seeing a video or something.
I’ll do a video but it won’t be a damn turntable. As I said in the post, a friend is working on a crazy rig. I’ll do a short animation for my upcoming reel in the next months.
Render time takes 10 min in 1K, with all at once (clothe, skin, fur); I’ll switch to render layer for animation purpose, it’ll be even faster I guess, with more control over the render.
Malonet: Thanks and respect man!
Copain. Merci mec. Well, I’ve already spent 11 h under the needle. I think we have around 20 more to do… damn!
Infinite: So you’re the one who read it all right? Hahaha. Glad you enjoyed the process. And regarding the quality of your work I’m really happy that you like this one this much. Seriously.
I’ve really spend a lot of time on the tattoo design, it was a tough call and since I’ll have it on my skin forever, I wanted it to be neat.
The whole process after was more to convert this experience into something that would combine all my passions. Graphic design, character modelling, experimentation…
Cheers mate.
Sheb: You’ll see it finished in the true life, when I’ll come and visit you in Tokyo my friend. It’ll be cool to be seen as a bad ass in Japan and get myself beaten up by people if they think I’m some kind of gangsta. Hahaha. Ladies and gent’s, respect for one of the best modellers I know!
Cooperunionstud : As I said in the post, i work (as a freelance from home) for Quantic Dream, a videogame company based in Paris. I do nex gen character for them (on a project called HeavyRain) and Thierry, the character supervisor, had the brilliant idea to buy a 3D scan for the faces of the actors he casts for the game. We’re usually matching our cages on top in order to be as close as possible.
Because it’s not a body scan, it creates tiny patches (let’s say around 30cm x 30cm of clean scan per shot); so we did something around 15 to 20 scans for the torso + head. The tough thing was to assemble these patches all together (you don’t really stay in the exact same position, breathing changes spin position too, etc…
When I was done with this, I assigned the scan to a frozen layer in Maya, and I imported my usual character cage. I matched it on top using NEX to soft select and move Vtx. When It was pretty close, I decided to upgrade the cage a bit, adding loops, removing others, sliding edges, etc… the idea was to have a clean, neat, but yet not too heavy geometry to start on with.
At this stage, it was enough for the tattoo process (UV layout, back and forth from Maya to Photoshop) to test, place, design the tattoo.
After a couple of days I decided to push the project further and go for a realistic render. It was time to do a little texturing and switch to Zbrush to sculpt the details visible in the scan, and even some that were not in it since it’s always a bit grainy. I used a lot of references (photos, mirror) to go as far as I could. Not too much nitpicking tho’ .
Does it help?
Fox. Thanks for the feedback dude. I do have less hair than when we met for sure. In fact I think the only time I had so few was when I was born. Hahaha.
Regarding the muscles, don’t be jalous man! It’s just that after the scan was completed, I said to myself “holly crap, you need to do something for this freaking belly, you’re too “young” for this to happen”. And then I started doing a little bit of exercises. Not too much tho, I know I could instantly be tough as hell which could be source of a lot of problems (jealousy, you know…).
Kiddin’
Implants? Neh! But I could use a intern GPS for sure. I can’t wait!

Yup even if it's a unusual previs (who could pay a 3Dscan for that ? ^^ Who wouln't love to do so before getting a huge surface tatoo?...), this is very interessing, and certainly well done (that's the "no suprise" comming from Mr Zimmermann ).
Appart the "interressing concept", it's also very cool CG images.
So I'd also vote for 100% plug !

Hey Loic! You already know what I think of this, but I'll say it again. Most impressive! :D
You know, I really should look into doing something similar as I have been thinking about designing my own skin art for a while now. I'm thinking more along the lines of a large body piece than a sleeve. Sleev would come later, lol! :D

Gorgeous in all aspects- especially the tattoo design.
I love seeing 3D used in different ways, especially in personal ways, actually affecting your own real life, like this with your tattoo or like a gardener designing their own flower bed. Really cool stuff.
I imagine that tattoo parlors will eventually be able to implement something like this to facilitate the design process. Hope so, anyway!
Thanks for all the info on your process too. All very interesting reading :)

A few things here that jump out at me. One, scans can be helpful! People give scanning a bad name but like anything else its merely a helping device. Two, I've never been too big into putting something permanent on my skin. However, if I were ever to do it, that tattoo design would make the cut. Three, realism also gets a bad name sometimes, but frankly I don't understand why. It's a form of artistic expression as much as anything else is. Being able to recreate the human form correctly is a very rare task that only a handful of people can do well. By the way, how much did the tattoo cost? Lastly, it's rare somebody gives an extended account of what they were going through to make their piece of art. I wish this would become more of the norm and trend. I'm sorry but a one sentence description of something you put a thousand hours into just doesn't cut it. Thanks Loic for the extensive, detailed recount of your experience on creating this work of art.
Hey!
Here is the design.
http://www.e338.com/downloads/e338_tattoo_design.jpg
Basically, the subject is a classical “LongMen’s fall” thing. A Koi fish turning into a dragon, with stuff around; waves, flowers, my Logo on the clavicle, and modern shapes.
Here is a quick shot of where we are so far. I go for another round on Friday. We should do the halftones, and reach the head of the dragon.
http://www.e338.com/downloads/earlybeginnings.jpg
And here is a shot of something at least as cool as a scan, that everyone should have to understand anatomy. C’mon, this is the perfect thing to ask for Christmas. Hahaha. His name is… Tyler; of course.
http://www.e338.com/downloads/perfectRef.jpg
Cheers to you all.
THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK, THANKS FOR THE FRONTPAGE PLUGG, THANKS FOR THE AWARD.
Frebell. Ash-Man, bymak, Thanks
Intervain: thanks too. I love your “sculpture” miss.
Quadart: yeah, I thought the process could be interesting for the CG audience. Glad to get some feedback on that too.
Infinite: hahaha. An award? This could be sweet !
Ahtl: cool. Yeah, this whole tattoo thing meant a lot to me. Having the possibility to access to a scan “for free” was a chance which I couldn’t miss.
Jedi-juice. Thanks. Go for it man. Once you’re sure of your design, this become a crazy experience. Once the sleeve is finished, I’ll make a break for a while but … there should be a next step. The full back and the other arm. I already have a blurry vision of it J
Shimrodd: interior design as a tattoo??? Hahaha. Please, don’t do the “kitchen of my dream” on your belly then! Cheers.
Niklas Collin: I’m thinking of it since 10 years now without having a precise idea tho’. Felt it was about time to sketch it down. Glad you like my design.
Elnady. Hi Ahmed. Thanks fella.
Atl4antis, oliveira: thanks to you too.
stephaneD: thanks. Yeah, let’s use CG for funny applications from time to time !
thatoneguy: Hahaha. 40 years!? Gee… From a dragon to a whale, right? For sure it’ll be badass!! It HAS to be this way.
derbyQsalano: yeah, scan; I wanted to be honest on the quality of references I had. Still, it’s a huge work but you surely know it. Basically, it really helps saving time and approximations.
Gatlingg: Glad to see the suppaHighRes becoming the wallpaper somewhere ;)
Afternooncoffeeboy. Hi. Beware of the dark side of the coffee. Thanks man.
DMNY: look backward if you wanna see some of my stuff; I need to switch to some more basic stuff before… the reel I’ll do next. Cheers.
Djampa: Oh my… what else to say? THANKS to you.
Ipereira: sweet. Cheers to you.
Shahabp: glad you enjoyed the process and the explanations, in addition to the pictures themselves.
LordDubu. This – Is - SPARTA !! well. Give a try, see if that works. And enjoy the pain.
Mindrot: you’re welcome to drop a line down anytime you visit my blog folk! Thanks to you.
Gpepper: salut mec. Thanks for the kind word.
Omega-Ond: Indeed, it’s a mix of traditional Japanese art, and modern design. Basically, the initial drawing is erased by part by elements of my logo. And wanted a combination of these too (plus halftones coz I’m fond on them).
Infinite: you again !?! Ok I promise. Next time it’ll be about chicks n inks! Thanks again dude.
Duke of Holland. Thanks to you !
jackZhang. “long speech”…. Yeah, this is how I am… When I feel passionate about something, I cannot count the words. I give workshops by the way, if someone is interested… hahaha.
Yeminius: And sick I am I guess. Take care.
RockstarKate: Yeah. I’ve been working for architecture in my early years of CG. Felt interesting to pre visualize something before it’s built. And, by the way, I’m doing the same for my “loft”. This must be a professional deformation. Although, for the tattoo, it was really a love thing since I dig characters a lot… Cheers to you.
Dalton- Muniz : thanks. Once again, glad to see people taking the time to read. It’s great !
Mr Positive: I kinda agree with a most of what you said. Regarding realism, it’s not my cup of tea when it comes to illustration… And basically I never did any for myself. In this particular case I felt it was a good opportunity. Anatomy is a trap I love. The more you go into it, the more you wanna know. It’s endless but really cool to master. I learn everyday about it.
Regarding the price, let’s say it’ll be insane in the end (since we’ve only done 30% of the entire piece), but the problem is not here. It really depends on the tattoo artist and the size/complexity of the artwork. Since this one is really full of details, it’s really time consuming and it requires a lot of precision. Just to explain. xK €.
kudos to you all...

Wow! Amazing work! A tattoo is a piece of art you have to live with for life, and that you wanted to explore your design this way before it is immortalized on your body is very clever. We 3D heads model our livingrooms in 3D before we redecorate, so why not our bodies before we redecorate them as well... lol!
And in the process you also created a wonderful piece of art which stands out in its own.
Award well deserved. Looking forward to see the finished tattoo! :)

Oh boy! When you told me about the tatoo project I though you were talking about CG only!. I realise now that you're a "surprises box" to me :D
Since that's a permanent thing in your body I think you did the right thing by using the prev on CG.
I have to say that this is one of the most interesting posts I ever read. Thanks for sharing.

That has got to be one of the most sickest tattoo designs I have ever seen! I hope that if I ever do this that mine would be half as good as yours. Simply beautiful!!
I also agree with Stefan. You really should show this off to the tattoo 'zines. I'm sure they would be more than happy to show a nice detailed "making-of" article of your experience.
Thanks again! Great inspiration!

wow .......thanks for your post.....Mr.e338.....and I am so glad that you know this classical story from china...... ...:scream:
“wow..the design inspiration from Chinese culture"I thought when I first saw the tattoo design.
um um .....fish....dragon with waves combined into a beautiful legend......this legend inspired the generation to generation....As of now,the story imply the human success in caree or the human success in study.....
anyway.....I so love the tattoo design .....and and .....hey...you finished a great work......Mr.e338... ......Congratulations.....

Stunning tattoo design!!! 10/10
No lack of detail anywhere. Your eye doesnt appear to have let anything slip by. And that character model is very impressive. Looks great with that tat on it and is about as phtorealistic as any character model I have ever seen.
Get at least 1/2 the money back from the barber though.... looks like he missed one side of your head. *wink-nudge*

This an an amazing piece of work to complete not only in 3d but to have it translated into reality is fantastic. Very cool to show a making of the 3d version as well as documenting the tattoo process you are undergoing. Good luck to you with sitting in the tattoo chair and congrats to the tattoo artist who is doing a wonderful job on your design. Amazing...

this is fantastic. yeah its good 3d, good textureing and all, but its just the whole thing as a thought process and an art process that i really admire, and sharing it too. i've fancied doing this thing for a while now but never really got round to it. i wouldnt go as far as modelling a whole me (cos i've dont that before and it was shit), maybe just my arm, but either way, its a great way to see what the end result will be.
that tattoo is wild, there is so much detail. you gonna have a lot of stares next time your at the beach hah.
it looks like serious business too. i hate seeing people who have got really cheesy and unoriginal tattoos!
definetly show a tat mag to say, hey look what i got done! i think not only the design itself , but the 3d pre vis process would be of interest for body art fans.
good luck with getting it finished. :)

I've never really been one for tattoos. I think they're interesting but that's about it for most of the time.
Yours however, ROCKS. I think your tattoo artist has to be one kind of amazing freak to be able to pull that off! I really hope it turns out perfect for real!
Please post a pic of it when you finally do get it done alrite?

Kanga: thanks. We could build an army of dragon fans, couldn’t we?
ArneK: thanks. I guess the simple “previz” approach would have left me unsatisfied I guess. I’m too much into pictures…
TMArtist: thanks, cheers.
Pascal_blanché: hahaha. Indeed, it does hurt a bit I must say. But it’s for the good cause, right? Cheers to you!
SamSed: Good morning Tokyo de ma part! Merci mec.
Sylvexsan: thx
Stefan morel: thanks. Regarding the tattoo magazines, we had this in mind with the tattoo artist early in the process. We just wait to finish it all before writing down the full experience.
Kaleen: thx… don’t talk. Breathe ;)
Lman: Err… luc Besson? I’m not sure I see the link… Anyway, thanks.
Sebcesoir: merci; t’es pas mauvais non plus tu sais. Hahaha.
Rhino : salut mec ! Sure, we’ll meet at Quantic in a couple of weeks i think. Cheers to you fella.
Butsa: ok. Well. Have fun doin’ this. Sleep a couple of night when the design’s done, just to be sure. And don’t drink before starting; it’s bad for the blood ;)
Poshpice: hey hey Aly. Thanks man. Hope I’ll manage to see you and Jonny this year.

Carlès: Hi Carlito !! glad to see you here. Hope to see you again sir, sharing a beer, talking polygons and music. Looking fwd to seeing your reel blasting the audience. Cheers.
Jaya6v: thx.
Jedi-Juice: I think my tattoo artist told me the same. Hahaha. Good to hear. As I said (to Stefan), we planned an article, but only when the tattoo will be fully finished. Working on it… seeya
Hooch. Yeah. What a brilliant gallery of geeks this would make. Hahaha. Cheers !
Minminxu: yeah, I made some researches before I start conceptualizing. I wanted to put some sense in this tattoo, meanwhile, I wanted to avoid some of the obvious clichés. Yeah, you might say, “a dragon, that’s original!!” . hahaha.
Wormod: yeah, I left that crazy hairdo behind me but it was fun for a couple of month. I wanted to experience the “shave your head in front of a mirror” experience. Well. This must be the year of crazy challenges for me I guess. Cheers.
Mathieu-gg: merci mec. Ca doit être ressemblant alors J
Aphextweak : thanks. For sure my tattoo artist rocks. 23 years of experience, he started to find he saw it all. Eh! Too bad for him. We are to people suffering during the sessions.
Dunkelzahn: hi Christoph. Hey man, your fish is awesome. Dig it a lot. Hope to see you in Köln too.
Mgn: salut Morgan. Merci mister. Je t’ai déjà dit que j’aimais beaucoup tes illus ?? à bientôt.
Michael-olszak, Alancamara : thanks a lot folks.
Ninjacore: well, may be you don’t have to go into hyper real to visualize a tattoo, but I guess having a whole portion of a body is better than just a limb. It’s a matter of proportions, space, etc… Anyway. Have fun if you give a try. And yeah, hope I’ll get grapes of babes hanging to me next holidays. Haha. Cheers.
Frameless: thanks. Painfree you say? Hope too. Can’t be worst than it was during the last session.
Lamster: I think that in tattoo you have the worst and the best crossing each other. Like for everything in fact. But most of the time I find them lame. So thanks. And yeah, I’ll probably update this thread from time to time with shots of the real one. On my website too of course.
See you later folks.:D

10-17-2007, 10:27 AM
Good model and texture. Good hair and facial hair reconstruction. Can't say the same for the render. The SSS looks wax-like. The lighting looks stylized and physically incorrect. Typical Mental Ray CG render. I would try redoing the image in a more realistic renderer like Maxwell. You'll get better lighting detail and camera simulation.

Your tatoo is great!
Did you a real?
Hey.
Back here finally. unable to answer to far. So it's time. here we go !
AndHolzmeiser: thanks. So you do belong to the anonymous visitors of my blog man? Well, feel free to drop a line one of these days, its all open and you’re welcome. Glad you like my stuff.
Am I crazy? Well, Doctors would says there are levels of crazyness… guess I’m climbing the ladder little by little. Cheers ;)
Ambiant-Whister: Another Zbrush guru in da house. Thanks man. Yeah, we’ll catch out on msn one of these days so you can talk to me about your European trip ! Good to see you here Caribou !
Iskon: Ha. Finally. A question regarding the sss tuning. Man. No tricks here. Well, at least nothing new. Just a basic Facing ratio/ramp driven blend on the diffuse to fake a slight fresnel. For the rest it’s very basic and I’m too lazy tonight to screenshot this. Sorry about that. Seek on CG talk for a thread called “Yatoer, the bus stop boxer”, I did some explanations of this particular character and there are screenshots. Cheers.
Stalsby: thanks..
Antropus. Here is another crazy Guru !!! “f-a-t-h-e-r” you say. Hahaha, this’d be funny for sure. Now, for sculpting while being tattoed ? Well, I guess I’ll have to wait for the next arm coz I won’t be able to move a finger with my right arm since it’s the one we’re working on. The idea seduces me though J Amen bro’
TeS: Yup, it’s a pretty big piece for a first shot, that’s what the tattoo artist said to me too. Well, you make it or you don’t. I do (which is dumb for sure). Cheers.
Bluecanvas: err… yes, the lighting is not “realistic” in the sense that I used additional spotlights with barn doors to enlight shadowed areas and specific parts. Don’t they do the same for cinema and photography? Anyway, this is of no importance to me. Now, considering the wax shader, I’ll try to improve things a bit for the animation then. It seemed decent to me. Cheers.
Abonora: hola Ale ! yeah, Seb seems to dig it, but since he’s living in Tokyo now, I guess he prefers avoiding trouble and not wear a Yakuza like tattoo. Missing a finger would be problematic to him, poor German needs them all to work. Hahaha.
Blashke: merci mister.
NR43: I agree with you and it’s the same thing in France. Well, imho. Now, this is a pretty time consuming process, a basic cage to simulate could be enough to design a tattoo I think, here it became a game to push the details as far as I could. (some tattoo artists are cool enough to redesign classics for each client, I think at least this should be the minimum to do. Choosing a “flash” in a catalogue seems lame to me; where the originality? Big hello to Belgium !
Sylph. Thanks. As I said to Iskon, I won’t show a thing here, there’s nothing new (not that I don’t want to share). It’s a classic.
MV: Salut Mathias !! Can’t stop staring at your speedpaint man, better each time. Just a fan word.
Shivesh: It’s hard to evaluate the time I’ve spend. An hour here, a day there. For the tattoo design I’ve been photoshoping for 20 hours at least, few hours every night for a week or most. For the character modelling (highres included), I might have spend 7 full days. The render/texturing took me a lot of time (maybe 2 weeks) since computation is time consuming.
Ok, in the end I’d ask a little month to a client to do the same I guess.
Raphael-Lacoste: Salut ! hahaha, yeah, realism eh! It’s mostly because I hate wasting hours waiting for the render to be completed that I don’t go for it. Well, you know that, you do illustration! Awesome work you did on Assassin’s creed.
Atwooki: thanks. It had to be personal. It was a real trip; so yeah, it required a lot of energy. Cheers to you.
Vencys: thanks thanks. See ya too.
noizFACTORY: Ed Norton this must be the hairdo. Glad to have a fan. Keep visiting the blog, although the next update will be related to 2D, silkscreen clothing… did I say I had a shop? Hahaha! Kudos.
Insane-mind: that’s a lot of stars eh! Thanks man.
Leishen: well, I should think about raising a gang then ! We’d scare my poor elderly neighbours with some NIN in our ghetto Blasters. Cheers.
Somhairle: Hola Barcelona! Thanks man.
Nexgirl: This is Sparta??!!! Hahaha. Well, those guys are tough mother fu… My torso may fit in one of their arms. Anyway, thanks.
Imnum: thanks.
Pierloh: bonjour petit gars! Indeed, we shared a beer right after the scan session; I remember you and Ludovic were amused by this whole project (and Max was sick by the single idea of a needle on his body)… Now you see what I meant. And soon you’ll see from your very eyes how it looks in the real life. See you … sPoon.
Artaxmadrid: thanks to you.
Floper: If I’m a freak, what are you? Foool ! ladies and gents, the man in the shadow, the ghost in the machine. Waiting for your kick ass rig fella.
Et non, 33 ans, svelte, racé, le muscle sec, la truffe saillante. C’est moi. Allez, on en recause dans 9 ans, quand la perfide Albion aura eu raison de ta ligne. Petit con
Tororiental : thanks……..
Morphine : Yeah, it does hurt a bit. But there no art without suffering, right? Cheers.
Monteiro: C’mon man! I wrote a book of explanations, illustrated with pictures where you can see me in the action, being tattoed, and you’re asking if I’m doing it for real? Cheers anyway.
Such a great feedback folks. Thanks to you all. I take it as a source of energy for the future headache I’ll have to go through during the animation process.
I wish I could come up with a superlative that can describe this work. But none exist.

Skt: Thanks to you. Si tu n'as fais que la prépa, je n'ai pas dû t'avoir comme élève, si?
loRdzeRo: Thanks.
bradw: as i said, this work was not only made for preview purpose, in the end it became a game to push the render and details as far as i could.
the artist who's tattooing me is Arnaud, and his office is in Reims/france.
The design is slightly changed in some areas because of positioning issues, but in the end, we're matching the CG one pretty closely.
ANIMGOD: what can I say. Max or Maya, who cares? As long as you're efficient with one of these two, it should be ok.
cgramesh: since my hair are really short, it's texture based on the head and i added some FUR in maya to make them look more convincing. Same for beard, eyebrows, arms&chest.
Edvin, YeeMao, nightwoodwolf: thanks fellas.
qiyuehai: thx. I've been working in the CG field for 8 years at this stage.
furbit: Lucky you if you have a tattoo artist in the family, this could be source of many experimentations i guess. glad you liked the thread. Felt it could be interresting to describe the process and not only show final pictures...
Abishai-RS: yeah. Luck is no longer required at the stage. Endurance may be. hahaha.
neellss, fahadkhan: Thanks
Inked3Dgirl: hi. Well, i guess this could be amusing for a while but i think i'll do this only for a couple of friends and stop. but i'm already starting to think about doing my back... this is endless...
tbx_3001. that's what the tattoo artist says each time I go there. "insane... insane..."
Thanks to you all. Thanks for the feedback. Buy my clothes and my prints now !!

Vraiment la classe. Y a franchement pas matière à critiquer, c'est pas du "bête" réalisme, y a une âme dans tout ça, c'est graphique, c'est fort.

Hello,
I have been looking for a tattoo in that style for 3 years now... I respect your work and was wondering if you could design a tattoo in that style for me. Almost the same size japanese sleeve minus the inside of the forarm where I already have the tattoo. If you would do this for me I would be honored and be more than willing to send you the images after.
I look forward to hearing from you.
All the best.

Hi FOLKS !
Thanks for all these comments, I'm sorry, I miss the time to answer to any each of you.
We started the real tattoo and late July, and here we are. March, 39hours later, it's finally finished.
This was a real experience, as an artist first, and as a... masochist I guess.
Few changes have been made, some corrections on the tricky areas, but one could say it's really close to the initial one right?!
OK.
I'll be back. More to come, I'll show you.

To be an artist wanting to get "inked" is equally exciting and frustrating. To spent untold amounts of time and energy researching the varying meanings tats have, what is aesthetically pleasing and what isn't, and searching for a tattoo artist that actually creates better work than yourself involves commitment.
Factoring in anticipated effects of aging, weight loss, and weight gain addes to the complexity. I'm planning on getting inked eventually so I'll probably just take pictures of myself and use Photoshop to place the tats in the right place.
Kudos on the effort and the detail involved. I wish I had access to full 3d body scanning. For now, I'll have my fun with Maya and Zbrush.
How much does it cost to get a full 3d body scan?

5*****stars- Self is the artist's best human reference- I'm asked often if I'm narcistic (by non-artists) because I sketch myself but I don't have to explain too much to myself about desired pose. I have long struggled with personal tattoo design and still have yet to get one. But this is a great idea to see how it'll appear prior to making a commitment- I also love the design- I like to sketch Koi and Dragons as well and the floral in there too is very nice. Great composition for the design and great realism for the 3D even though the textures are low res they look great. Very inspiring for me.

Very interesting write up, thanks for sharing your experience so throughly.
My first sitting was also about 4 1/2 hours, the whole time I was thinking of happy thoughts, like tears and clouds, and red, and emptiness... it was a wonderful experience...
still, looking back now, I wouldn't have changed a thing. :)

Hi Loic,
I'm a big fan of your work but man, you've one-upped yourself! Great tattoo design as well. I like the way your skin tone reverses the image in places -- of course you'll never be able to get a tan (at least on your right arm).
Cheers
