Hey guys Roberto here:
As part of the HCRmodeling challenge I got a request for a modeler for some custom concept art.
The idea is that the concept art might end up as a basis for a 3D sculpture.

For those who wish to skip this and draw something else, I have posted also the Monday topic:

CgTalk Daily Sketch 1224 NTL "Young Love" (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=130&t=550191)

Anyway, here is the SHOT commissioned by the sculptor:

"Encounter With A Shadow Demon"
By
Felix Lahme
as inspired by a painting by Jakup Kasper

It’s magic hour, the exact time of transition between day and night, a time of perfect twilight.

Everything and every detail around you is clearly discernable, yet paints its shape into your vision without any colors, merely in shades of gray. As your eyes adjust to the conditions even more, you make out an unidentifiable manifestation somewhere a short distance ahead. It’s there and yet it is not, a formless, transparent, intangible vortex of shadows, growing in size and diameter. You stand there paralyzed.

Slowly, the apparition takes on a more humanoid outline, yet still retaining a characterless, smoky appearance. As it solidifies further, it suddenly moves towards you with lightning speeds, and as it reaches you, touches you with one of its shadowy fingers.

At the creature's matter-less touch, images of your own life and ideas, as well as things, concepts and places unknown race through your head. The creature is communicating with you on a telepathic level, extracting your most guarded thoughts, wishes, fantasies and darkest fears.

Slowly it takes on a more discernable shape, transforms from a black form without identity into a transparent shadow-creature of inhuman female beauty, surrounded by wavering masses of shadows of varying density. Like a siren, she beckons you to follow her with a painful yearning, tempting you with unspoken promises und irresistible allure.

Beckons you to follow her to a gateway to another world between the worlds, existing in eternal, timeless twilight. Her pull is strong and the more you resist the more powerful her beckoning, the more alluring her beauty and promises become.

The initial communication with her went both ways and somewhere deep inside you know that she is drawing you closer to your doom, pulling you into a world where the resident creatures will consume your substance, essence, entire being and soul, like an aged wine of indescribable quality and despite this foreboding of your horrible fate you cannot resist her pull….

Directorial Instructions:

The final concept design should depict the female demon in her most alluring, yet terrifying appearance in a very detailed fashion. While the overall look should be that of an extremely attractive and sexually alluring human female, she should retain a number of very subtle, yet prominent features revealing her demonic nature, hinting at the horrible fate that awaits her victim.

You have no time limit for your sketch. IF you go beyond the assigned time limit , you have to post WHATEVER you have done after the time has expired, along with the FINAL drawing.

NOTE: I am planning to use this art as part of the next Modeling challenge. You may see your concept art as 3d models!

Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
They can be done on any medium.
If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
You can post an entry at anytime for the topic presented on this thead BEFORE the voting thread for THE WEEK has been posted.
The artist also has to post total length of time it took and program used.
Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
The topics will be picked at random from the list on the TOPICS thread >>LINK<< (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php/?t=145003)
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them).

Many thanks to Roberto for posting my narrative here as a concept and to CaveatScoti for the first entry!

For all artists interested in tackling the concept purely for fun or perhaps as training for a real-world production pipeline, I thought I'd add the following notes:

I intentionally left the description rather incomplete in terms of exact physical traits, since as a director/writer I hate to restrict an artist's individual creativity by imposing my own, very specific ideas. I am always looking for something original and so, by all means, feel free to go all-out with your imagination and put out something really wild.

I usually tell my film or stage actors for castings and workshops to show me their most extreme individual interpretation of the scene in question and let me take it from there. I personally feel what works extremely well for finding a good balance between the director's vision and the actor's individuality, works very well for concept design also. Prerequisite is the artist's willingness to first explore the scene according to their own individuality and then take specific direction and be guided towards the final goal.

As a sideline, I'd also like to remark that I am very well aware of the ususally long road from written word to final, approved concept and am thus available for individual concept discussions via pm.

I am looking forward to what you can come up with!

PS: The entry I will use for the modeling challenge, will of course be more than appropriately credited and referred to. In addition the artist will be provided with high-res renders of the final shaded/textured model for their own use in portfolio etc.

PPS: To win or not to win should never be a consideration in any challenge or other endeavor. What is important is to go down new roads, which you haven't gone down before and stretch your capabilities and experiences beyond where you currently are. I am doing that with my participation in the modeling challenge and am challenging you, regardless of whether you are a hobbiyst, professional or aspiring professional to do the same here. Cheers! ;)

SO, the demon has a 'body' of what should be soft tactonic-plate-like sections, with the black substance of the entity itself drifting from between them. the face ought to be softer, more human, and slightly sad, like sucking souls is a necessary evil; a curse. Good luck with the volumetrics here, maybe going to be a bitch.

Only fleshed out the texture on part of the body, kind of pushed for time between assignments here.

Great next version, Al! Many thanks for your work and efforts.
I have pm-ed you some directions!

PS: Just in case there are others still considering to work on this:
Go your own route!
Dont let yourself be guided by what you see here or any remarks I may make to someone else's work!
This has nothing to do with good or bad, appropriate or not, but with preserving your own individual flow of creativity and getting a 100% original result!

Btw, there is no need to emulate a modeling pose in the painting, although it is helpful.
You should primarly envision and paint an "action"-pose though.

This was fun- and so far off the path of anything I would normally do.

If you'd like to use mine as a concept for your model, I can try to modify it for you if you'd like.
If not, I think I'll just leave it as is and move on to a new sketch :)

Well I used pencil paper again, but with this drawing the canvas was to big for my scanner so some edges of the picture(particulary on the demon size) were cut off. Hope it is still fine. I'm still working on my drawing skill with just a regular pencil but hopefully soon i will have a wacom tablet.

Pencil Paper 35mins

Hi Kate!
Unfortunately a "casting"/selection-process doesnt work that way.
The basis of your idea is interesting and could be worked into something very original, but "as is" it is not sufficient for me to make a solid decision. So I basically issued a call-back to both, you and Andrew and if you dont want to take it, but move on, that's fine! :)
Many thanks for your efforts anyways!
As a side note: You were the first, at least here in the forum, to incorporate some form of clothing/costume, which is not part of the creatures "body". Neat! ;) Do most people these days really equate sexually alluring with butt-naked?!?!

zenake:
Hi Daniel.
Neat sketch! In any case, my first general advice is to tenaciously preserve and nurture the imagination of your inner child, which lead you to visualize this rough sketch.
If you would like to take this further with directions, pm me!

Cheers and many thanks to all of you again!:arteest:

I guess what I was saying is that I wouldn't mind doing some more work on it if you think you might want to use it- but if you're definitely not, then I'll move on.
I definitely know absolutely nothing about this kind of "casting" process. I do forensics animation/graphics for a living so this is very different for me. :)
So yes, send me some notes and I'll see what I can do. I'd be curious to know what you'd say. I'm more of a 3D person too, so I'm imagining making all the cloth bits would be a mighty pain!
There were some things I intended to add but didn't because it was starting to take a long time. I was going to make a lot more cloth/scarves in varying degrees of transparency and I thought about also adding strings of beads wrapped around her. I wanted her to look like she's floating and defying gravity- but I think maybe it just looks like she has big fake boobs :)
Anyway, whatever you decide is fine with me, this was fun.

I knew I had to make something for this one, so here is my interpretation of story above.
I used autoportrait photo of me on office chair posing for this piece solely, and another one of some girl, everything else (smoke-cloud like thing), is painted in CS3 with wacom intuos, I think I spend over 5 hours playing with this image, not including photo session and browsing trough stuff for inspiration.
Anywho, this theme is really inspiring.

Hi Damir,
very cool composite-paintover, with beautiful overall atmo and feeling!

Since I personally don't do this type of composite paintover work, I am not sure how far you can really take it in terms of character concept design. If you think you can provide more detail, sufficient to build a concept for a 3D sculpt, using this or any other way of working, pm me for more specific comments and directions. :)

Cheers and many thanks for your efforts!

Here is my further explanation of my vision of this shadow demon.

I interpret your description like this, the demon is actuall, physical creature, as seen in my 3d sculpt, it looks terrifying, it's feeding on human souls/flesh and dwells in shadows.

Now, to be able to catch the man, the demon had to mask itself to anything that would help him to get close enough to catch it's victim(that's my previous image)

Way he did it is, he would emmit chemical supstance in the air, and in that certain area, anybody would see the demon like demon wanted them to.
There's the "catch" also, demon can't influence multiple victims, he can only "hypnotise"
one victim at a time, so he lurks for the ones that are for whatever reason allone.
(in my case, I stayed at my firm at night, when there is no one else arround, and on top fall asleep tyred of work, and there is no better way to loose soul and body:)))

Also, one might think why so much bothering to get a man's soul, when this fierce creature could take a man by blink of an eye.
The soul of a man is only usable to demon if the man is relaxed, unafraid etc.
Also, demon is able to move trough air, what is his major mean of moving arround .

Anywho, I just liked your short story which inspired me to make something, which is good thing.
If you wont have use of this, I hope you come up with something that will work for you ultimately...

Total time for zbrush sculpt, arround 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Sketch done in CS3, 10 minutes of doodling, executed via wacom intuos.

:beer:cheers.

Hello again Damir!
Excellent interpretation and beautiful further concept work, as well as superb character analysis and background research!
However there are some fundamental issues regarding the purpose of this concept.
I have pm-ed you some more specific comments!
Again, this is outstanding work!

CaveatScoti:
Excellent, Al! Another short pm is on its way to you.

Cheers!
