View Full Version : Is wings3d becoming a dumping ground for test forums?
wasamonkey 04-09-2003, 04:16 PM maybe a forum just for testing the popularity of new threads is in order?
cheers

Probably
But wouldn't there also be a need to have a forum to discuss what sort of voting method was to be employed - otherwise, how would we decide which was the most popular?
Would the voting system include some sort of 'weighting' for individual votes - or just a standard 'one person, one vote' scenario?
What about if all people involved model (in wgs, of course) a secret ballot box (with a model of their vote inside) and send their file to an independant adjudicator?
pp
Ahhh....... but would (or should) the quality of execution of this model also be taken into account ........... maybe a forum to discuss this too?
Yeah it does seem like we are getting grouped with all the free apps, I don't get why it's more appealling to lump all of these together versus just adding a blender forum and side effects forum to the front page...
imo this current situation sucks because I check the frontpage all the time to see if there are any new posts in this "wings" forum and when I see that there are I enter only to find that someone posted in the blender forum (which interests me as much as moldy bread)

Just relax guys, reason I did this was because the userbases are still quite small and it's beginning to get "heavy" on the frontpage, and until they start to show promise on the forums, I'll "unlump" them. Instead of complaining simply ask a question to those that run the forum and you'll have your answer.
Just wait it out for a bit yah? Or maybe you want me to create a forum called "Other Apps" and put these three under that, doesn't sound as appealing.

The blender and houdini forums are seperate from the wings forum anyway , do you see blender or houdini questions here?
The front page has enough forums already we are just trying to keep this place tidy. I dont see how thats causing any problems.

<< show promise >>
Just curious about what criteria / thresholds / throughput etc will be used to decide this?

activity and the quality of the threads

Seems fairly vague - as an answer
Use of 'threshold / throughput' indicated that I considered numbers were likely to be involved - any chance of quantifying this ?
Quality - I'd certainly not disagree with this - but since this is somewhat subjective - any examples of what those with fingers on buttons are looking for (at both ends of the spectrum) - just to ensure we're all singing from the same hymn sheet?
pp
What it means perhaps is this.... if everyone is going to tiumph Wings3D or other apps, then do it not through generating a tight closed, bias, and ever defensive position... but rather demonstrate more worx, tuts, and the like for all to enjoy... it is only through the worx shown, and the patience and understanding shared through the members, that this community requireing such uniques status, is ever going to be...

from an asethetical point of view i agree - having houdini as a subforum of wings3d is questionable
how about a new top level forum where low frequency forums are subforums (maybe even wings3d)
something like "Others"

I'm not sure how big a wings forum here would get.
The activity on the Wings development forum is great. What other app do you get to communicate directly with the makers and get fast reponses and often direct changes to the application within a week?
Still its good for Wings to have a forum here, as every now and then, you'll notice a regular cgtalk user gets curious about Wings and decides to check it out after seeing this forum.
Still, I WOULD like to see a thriving and seperate Wings forum here. If I can find the time, I'll try and post here a bit more and encourage others to do the same.

This is a seperate wings forum , the houdini and blender forums are subforums under wings 3d , that doesnt mean they are associated or doesnt make them any less important than wings.
I didn't start this wings forum to compete with the official development forum , The goal is to raise awareness towards wings and to grow its userbase.
We are just trying to keep Cg Talk tidy and having two subforums under here does nothing to the integrity of the wings forum.

sorry I got this whole thing started
I was just curious if this was going to continue and make a suggestion
didnt expect everyone to act so negitively towards it
I personally dont have a problem with it
but also dont want to have to scroll down half a page of
subforums to view wings related threads either :D
not that I think it would ever come to that
another idea that might solve this whole thing
make wings a sub forum too?

I think the site is laid out logically and responsibly... I mean I do want wings to take over the world and all that jazz :) but if grouping these forums keeps me from seeing the dreaded 'server too busy' page I'm all about that.
Thanks Cerreto and Sheep Factory for moderating us and at least letting us have a 'private' corner to talk.
I'm looking forward to the BOF CgTalk at SIGGRAPH (there is gonna be one right?)... maybe it'll be so big we'll have a SIG wings? :)... either way I'm buying some beers for ya!

If it goes as we planned we'll have a much better meeting than a BOF meeting ;) and the beers are on us
