View Full Version : Need some minor help
lebada 04-09-2003, 03:30 PM i just started making a plane like craft thingy(pictures will be included later..i gotta up them first)...
i'm having some problmes with some gap in the hull of the plane...which i could make use of maybe later on(insert some kind of tube or that kind of stuff and make it look a bit industrial...
so i can give the to whoever can help me correct that and also help me sort the thing out of UVW unrapping...(i know..supposed to be fairly easy)...i tried out unwrapping before but nothing like this...
thats why i need someone help me "polish" the plane and sort some of the vertices corrctly so they dont show extra cuts or lines and finally help me make it reasonably seeable in UVW unwrap..
I'll up 2 pics of it in a moment...anyone have spare time to help me?:)

I can at least get you going...
You need to provide a bit more info.
What version of Max are you running?
If it's version 5, then you are in luck, if not, we can still work you through some of this.
Your question is a hopelessly vague and general. Most of the answers are available in the manual, and in the tutorials sticky thread at the top of this forum.
There is also a very good UVW unwrapping tutorial availabe in the "calling all Noobs" sticky thread at the top of this forum. It's in the tutorial they are all doing together.
Have a look around CGTalk for tutorials. Do them, and then we can answer your more specific questions.

okay..figured it out myself...basically i welded most of thevertices and go rid of the faces that i didnt need...
next step would be which one?:
make it mirrored(instance/copy) then UVW unwrap
or
UVW unwrap..then mirror it(copy/instance)
If its UVW i'd better find someone who's good in 2D caz i'm not a specialist in textures...

Buggy166, check this thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54856) out before posting future queries.

so you want me to change my "vague" title for this post...
it isnt that much of a newbiew question...making a glass teapot isn't the issue here...UVW unwrapping is harder than just a material...
and my previous question isnt about a tutorial or which can be found in one...just wanna know whats first...
mirroring or unwrapping

Cool, Buggy166!
Although the original subject line doesn't change.
I'll (and others) will hopefully be able to help you out now.

lol...well...good part..i'm beginning to master more and more box modelling...bad part...i stil have no idea of how to make my own textures(even tho i do work with illustrator and paint shop pro at times) and i have a very slight idea about how to UVW unwrap...
besides...i'm not a noobie or a newbie...i'm a novice...finished my college intro to 3Ds max course a couple of weeks ago...hehe:airguitar

If the plane is for an in-game model, most people UV fist, then mirror. This saves bitmap space, but the model looks mirrored.
If not for a game, then you might start out UVs first, then mirror, then edit the UVs some so they aren't mirrored on the bitmap anymore... you can have two different wings for example.
Mirroring the geom after apply UVs will save a lot of time.

i think it'll most probably be for animation although it has few faces..yeah...those screens were just to show how it would look when its mirrored...
its for a "desert" game and i'll need to look for someone who can do textures for a nice "desert plane" kinda thing...
ohh..and what UVW is the easiest to use?
normal/planar etc

Adding Textures to the Spaceship with UVW Unwrap
This tutorial describes the process best. Ships with Max 5.
