View Full Version : Thickener in XSI??
fabioamano 10-13-2007, 08:34 PM Hi!
I am a user of Lightwave / Modo but I am studying the XSI and enjoying much! In Lightwave and the Modo have a plugin called Thickener you must know, my question is if I have a equal tool in XSI !
Thank you to all!

nah..never seen such a tool, modeling in xsi is a bit basic compared to Modo or Lightwave. Try duplicating the polygons you want to thicken (Ctrl + D) and the push deformer.

there's a plugin by Kim Aldis that does it, and it's commonly known as a "shell" operator (aldis.org.uk I think)
as for xsi modeling being "basic" compared to LW's... That would be a long discussion to have :p

I think there are several other plugins out there besides Kim's too. Such as MoveNormal, though Kim's has A LOT of other options with it (but is not free).

As to how it stacks up with LW...that is 1 part mater of taste and 1 part mater of somethings one does better than the other, and 3 parts ignoring that many of the modeling tools in XSI aren't just "modeling tools". There are some fairly basic "modeling" things that LW still isn't up to par on- like CC sub division surfaces and working with edges in general. It's also a hell of a lot harder to work JUST in a perspective view port in LW with most tools...but I digress...
But for toonfish's needs there maybe some things still lacking in XSI...however besides familiarity I don't see how LW over all takes the crown. Modo...different story...but modeling IS it's claim to fame. Want to try stacking animation in XSI against modo?

I come from Lightwave too and have found that using Happy Digital's HDPump works great. It's fairly easy to move the mesh back and forth between LW and XSI.

Well I don't know why Kim has taken down TinyThickness...must be something to do with 6 or maybe he's repackaging it (TinyPush)? Who knows...here is a cached page so you can see what it does:

It was a lot more flexible than HDpumpit or most other solutions as it could be animated AND had things like profile curves etc. I'll write him (if he doesn't respond here first) to see what's up with the plug.

Or you can use Solidify2 from the here (http://www.mindthink.de)

In XSI, open the NetView (alt+5) and search for solidify.

I am modeling a shoes, used to solidify to create a thickness and internal polygons, after creating i canot select, modify, extruding anything! What I do wrong? ? I did a test creating a cylinder, deleting the poligons of the base and top, used to solidify and he create a thickness, internal poligons and i can select, change, drawing ... Because in canot my shoes ? !

Check your normals -- your shoes are probably inside-out and you've been trying to select the back sides of the polygons. Select the object and use Modify > Poly. Mesh > Invert to fix them.

Hi everybody!
Thanks a lot!
I can use Solidify but I feel lack of more control, for example see in real time the thickness of the edge before giving ok! Maybe a Tyni Thicknees or Solidify 2 have a more control? But the Solidify tool is very good!
I have one more question, is how to put this tool as part of the menu Modify / Poly.Mesh?
Or something similar?

Not sure how to add it to menus, but you can create a toolbar, and drag the script onto the toolbar to create a button for it. You can also create your own layout with your toolbar built into it...
Check out the manual. Should be something in there to help you out.

or drag it onto a new toolbar like Dave said, and then you can bind it to a shortcut key.
I've been using Solidify 2 from Helge alot lately and it works very well.
