Hey, I think it looks amazing. You have done a great job avoiding the 3d'ish look lots of images have. Its also great because it allows the viewer to use his imagination. At first I thought it was a very strange flower. Well done!

I used one of the sky fluid fx presets in Maya and increased its resolution to about 160.
I then converted it to polygons. I tried to smooth polygons but Maya quit out when I tried.
I then used a sculpt deformer to draw it into the centre.
The texture is a simple crater procedural assigned to the lovely new mia x material with bump mapping built in (who would have thunk it!).
