View Full Version : How to make a character grab something, let it drop, grab it again?
PIXAR 04-10-2002, 07:17 PM am ready to animate my characters, allthough i have one problem. I have a guy and he sees a little plastic tank, he wants to pick it up, look at it and then he throws it on the ground behind him, but how to do this?
1. how to attach the little tank to his hand while he takes it and how to let it detach from his hand when he throws it away? (max 4.2 user)
thx in advance!
(it's like the robotarm that takes a box, picks it up and places it on the floor somewhere else)

Look up for the Link Constraint. It does exactly what you need.

i did something similar to this and the solution is easy: link the tank to a dummy, then the dummy to the hand.....when he grabs the tank and walks around w/ it or whatever it'll follow, and then when it's time to throw it, animate the tank by itself - or just split up the animation into easier to handle sections , seperate max files for the grab and throw animations - hope this helps

U can also use a IK blend on biped hand : put IK blend to object and pick tank .You can easily do the pick & drop thing by animating IK blend value between 0 & 1 . The coll thing is that you animate tank and the hand follow (position & orientation) .Hope I helped.......
