HDRI means High Dynamic Range Image, and it is an image standard usually used in radiosity rendering as this standard contain a lot of information about different exposure of a photo. With the use of these images you can achieve realistic renderings in a very simple way. You can look in Tutorial Sticky thread for link about HDRI.

R8 can use HDRI as a regular image, while R8.1 can take advantage of the full dynamic range for use in radiosity scenes and for more realistic reflections. If you have 8.1 it's explained in the addendum, and there's a tutorial on Maxon's site regarding the use of HDRIs.
