Anyhow, on to some recent work...I can finally post the work I did for Guitar Player magazine.

This was a killer to do because I only had a week and two days to do a two page spread as well as a cover. They needed the inside Zappa spread first, and it took much longer to do than I had thought it would, leaving me only four days to complete the cover. It was nuts, had to pull an all nighter, drank many Monster energy drinks, and the rest is history! I'm really happy with how Zappa's guitar turned out, even though it was a lot of work. Zappa has a distinct SG, very unique and personalized, so when painting his guitar I knew I wasn't going to get away with just painting any old SG, it had to be his . . . with all the nicks and scratches, the whole SHA-BANG!

Beautiful Jimi Hendrix that have been done in a wonderful way by Sebastian Kruger .
You gonna have to share the first place with Sebastian.

that`s definatley my favorite work from you so far, not only because I`m a passionate guitar player
behind me on the wall I have also a SG `71 so I can say you captured Zappas baby perfectly (only his eyes could show a bit more of his madness but I guess it`s incredible for the deadline you had)

Whoaaaa!! I saw that issue and I was thinking dang... I wonder if Jason Seiler painted that! hahaha... I guess I was right.

I hope they put this on front page. Your caricatures are really beautiful

First of all, fabulous work, I don't think I'll ever believe that this was so successfully done in such a short time ;)

And now I get to embarass myself: who are all the players caricatured there?
I certainly know Santana and Hendrix, but who is the guy with the classical guitar? Chet Atkins? And the other two...van halen and pual simon, maybe?

Hehe sorry for my lack of guitar knowledge; I'm honestly just curious to know a few more of what are apparently very big names with faces :-).

nice stuff mate! can you show us some reference shots? and maybe even share some Photoshop techniques? Lot of people are using liquify these days and getting some great results

abs unbelievable! what a great portrayal for such amazing legends ! I really love hendrix,he looks awesome ! but one more thing and am afraid i might be wrong with my assumption here , but isn't that Jimmy page to the right? if am wrong then i sincerly appologize, anyhow I can't help but love it , this goes to my fav images for sure ... :)

Thank you all so much!!! I am teaching an online course soon for schoolism, there I will be teaching my techniques and approaches to caricature. Also there will be demos on painting, in values and color, as well as some limited palette options. As for my work, I feel I must make it clear that I do not do any photo manipulation, and I don't use "liquify" or whatever that is? Not sure what that is? Everything that I do digitally is drawn in photoshop, or sketched with pencil and scanned in, and then painted in all in photoshop.

As for who's on the cover, it's Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Chet Atkins, Santana, and Zappa.

Don't get me wrong Jason, Im just interested in your technique as a caricature "hobbyist" and seeing the original photo references are usually the best way to see how you have distorted the images. I understand if you don't want to show the reference pics but it's kinda like asking to see a mesh for a 3d model! :)

SpaceTik - Unfortunately I cannot post any of the reference pics I used for this image. I'll try to do that at least once in the future though. These ones were supplied by Guitar Magazine. Many of the pics have never been published and I had to mail it back to them when I was done.

In my caricature class on Schoolism I'll be showing people all my reference, how to take reference and how to use reference and there's no photomanipulation involved.

Maybe I'll post some traditional works next time.

i recognized Hendrix instantly from my poster ;P, only he has a white istage outfit in that, but pose and head tilt the same.None the less really great painting man!

I'm amazed how you draw the hands to appear so natural. The poses are great, and it doesn't look like a drawed hand... It's amazing.

As a guitar hobbist, I truly identify my self with this subject. Great job on character similarity, pose, realism, color, (love the guitars also).

Wow, amazing work! I actually saw that magazine in the store yesterday, and I only noticed it because of the wonderful charicatures on the front page (I'm not a guitar player myself), so I was wondering who had made that cover! It was amazing to find it on the CGtalk gallery the next day! It's not something you see here every day! Great work!
