Hello everyone! i wish everyone the best luck with their projects.
Now as for my question, i'm sure someone has coverd this but i scoured the forums and couldnt find any help on it....the displacement works sort of fine...besides the fact that i put a scar on the left side of my guy and when i bring it into maya the scar is on the right side...i checked the uvs and they arent backwards or anything i.e ( i clicked the left polygon and it appears on the left shoulder like it should) however when i make my displacement map...it appears on the opposite side...whats up with that? anyone else had this problem? oka that was just my secondary problem...my main question is this: i fiddled with the alpha gain and offset but i still get artifacts in every render i have with mental ray and my displacements...like a subtle wavyness i have included a picture of what i mean. (the giant hole in his chest is supposed to be there...the one on the right, i actually sculpted it on the left in zbrush but turns out on the right in maya...as for the dimples that looks like a rough texture...those are the artifacts i speak of) please help me if you can...thank you

Hi, sorry for late reply, only just seen this.
By the look of your image, there are lots of contours around the head and that instantly says to me that the accuracy of your disp map is limited, so I guess its exporting as an 8-bit or maybe 16-bit grayscale image. I would suggest you use 32-bit displacement if thats possible with your software. If you already use such high accuracy maps, then maybe the scale is a bit off, so your map comes out mostly grey or something....
I would guess the 'noise' is due to dithering, though I'm not entirely sure that dithering is performed. This will also go with higher accuracy maps.
good luck

thank you for your reply embrionic!! ya i checked them out in imf_disp.exe and ya and it changed it to 8 bit when i converted from .tif to .map. so i just left it at .tif for the 16bit and things are working out better....as far as the backward thing i think i figured it out..after going through all the menus possible i found in the zbrush preferences there is something called iflipX i turned that on and the details are where they're supposed to be now....THanx again for your reply EMBRIONIC!
