how do you import reference pics into max....i tired to make it my back ground but it was too big. i remeber there being a way that you could import a bitmap that would act as a reference...any insight would be great thanks

Yo,

using "background images" is in my experience unstable (both because of the size issue you mentioned, but also because sometimes the background images are locked, sometimes they slide, and sometimes they decide to just move... :surprised ).
Instead, use 2 planes which you apply your "front" and "side" bitmaps to.

Cheers,

OK! ;)

What you wanna do is right-click your object, select "properties", and then check "see-through".

That'll preserve all shadnig in the viewport, but make your object transparent.
