View Full Version : HMC#11 Kangamole Bunny
Paul4wood 10-11-2007, 02:12 PM Thanks to Bobby Chiu for the great concept art and to CG Talk for the opportunity to participate in this challenge. I hope to complete the challenge this time. :)

This was a false start that I made last night. I decided that the spline layout was not going to animate as well as I would like so I started again.

I have made a fresh start. Very rough layout at the moment. I will add detail as neccessary as I it comes together.

Hello,
Looks like you are really moving on this guy, pretty close to the concept, can't wait to see you texture this guy!

greetings...
first off nice start so far... looks like a good start...
second to put in the images... there is a sticky in the anatomy thread that rebeccak (I think) put in that explains how to put up pictures at full res...
keep it up

Lordrych - Thanks for the encouragement. Some way to go before I can start the texturing but I'm looking forward to that too. :)
morphius-ms - Thank you for the encouragement and for pointing me to Rebeccak's guide to Photobucket! :) If the image in this post is full size then it worked. :) http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee37/p4wood/CG_ModelChallenge_11/KangamoleBunny_B00i0.jpg

hi paul,
i think this is a good start in general.
but it seems that you "overdo" the haptic style of this character. the raw shape is designed to be relatively primitive and simple. the details like folds / wrinkles are "relief"-style. especially your legs got too deep ripples according to the simple shape style concept. maybe you better sculpt those details or force them by bumb map or smth like this.
i hope i could explain my view.. this hint may be given too early anyway.

PS: which app do you use?

Thanks for your comments, onetoe. Yes it is a mess at the moment. I will be toning down the wrinkles but I want to keep enough to animate. At the moment I am reworking the hind legs. They will be a little like bunny legs, but smaller so that they can be folded into an arrangement that matches the concept art. Rigging must be considered from the start.
That last WIP was the wrong image. This is the update:

I hope to have this creature in better shape tomorrow.
Thanks.

A little progress but not as much as I had hoped for.
I decided to put a rig in to test whether I am on track or not. The main concern that I had was the legs with all the folds of flesh. I rendered a quick 360 which helps me see where I am and what I need to concentrate on next. Still lots to do before I can start texturing.

The body proportions need to be adjusted, particularly the shoulders and arms. Well, everything really.:scream: I will probably remove some of the geometry from this model or start another simpler version after I have played around with this one for a little.
KangamoleBunny needs a tongue, I think, but the concept sketches don't show one. I wonder if it is permitted to add features like that. Perhaps if Bobby Chiu sees this he can tell me if Kangamolebunnies have tongues. :)
Thanks.
Paul

samarcbz - Thanks! :) I will be starting textures next so that should help.
RobertoOrtiz - Thanks for the heads up, Roberto! :)

I have been playing about with the legs. The concepts leave alot to the imagination. Does a Kangamolebunny shuffle along, hop or something else? Most of the legs appear to be obscured in rolls of flesh and we can only guess at this creatures bone structure.
I decided to give him more power and have extended his legs so that they are more "Roo-like" but still try to conform to the folded form that Bobby Chiu has given him.

Here is a 360 of the ammended model: http://s234.photobucket.com/albums/ee37/p4wood/CG_ModelChallenge_11/?action=view¤t=KMB_reduced_Test_A02.flv
( Would people prefer YouTube for these 360s or is Photobucket okay? I must get some decent webspace. )
IThe model is not fully rigged or weighted yet but you can see the route that I am taking with Kangamolenunny's legs. Oh, I forgot the tongue again so I will just do that before starting some basic textures.
Cheers. :)

samarcbz - As soon as I have made a tongue for this model I will get onto the texturing. That should help.
Roberto Ortiz - Thanks for the heads up.

I have been playing around with the legs in order to give the kangamolebunny a little more speed. He now has extended legs, more like a kangaroo, but I am trying to stay as close as possible to Bobby Chiu's concept of what they look like in a folded pose.
Here is the new wire shot:

And here is a 360 of the ammended model which is not completely rigged or weighted yet:

I'm loving the model, however I'm not too keen on the way the legs folded at the end in the video you posted.
Keep up the good work!
