Hello friends.

3 months from now i made an application for an admission in to Gnomon school of Visual effects for High end CG certificate program, but i was rejected on the basis that i was not good in tradational art and i was not good in sketching and my sketches looked cartoony.
i was told that i do not qualify the Gnomon standards.

Gnomon told me that they accept the best animation students and students with good art background from all over the world.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After three months
------------------

So i planned to take scetching classes and worked hard as much as i could.
I remade my portfolio. So now the point is like i have seen many ppl here which are from gnomon and are doing the HECG certificate program.

I would like to share my portfolio with everyone here and would like to have some help from you and I need some crits on what is lacking and what I can do more. I have only 1 week with me more to correct and make more sketches if requires

I wanted to make a concept character, but I am really week at concepts basically I lack in like from how to come up with an idea?, what to make ? will it be a human or an animal or a mixture?

So I also want a character with different angles and doing different things and doing different actions and different body language and gestures. Can you guys help me in making a character so I can add in my portfolio

Here is what I have got so far for my portfolio. some sketches are from reference.

Most of your drawings lack a sense of depth or 3D form, you can easily work on that though. Try sketching everyday objects and figures using only simple 3D shapes like cylinders, squares/rectangles and spheres, drawing the whole shape in 3 dimensions, not just the lines that define the shape from your perspective.

Heres an image i googled up, maybe not the best example but you get the idea...
http://community.conceptart.org/gallery/I/2005/01/01/28819.jpg

This approach is sometimes called drawing with the building blocks of form. It looks like you used this a little in your 3rd image, and your 'digital work' image, but you need to practise it allot more.

Remember that good drawing is NOT about having the 2D lines 'in the right place' as a copy of the outline of a person or the shape of an eye or whatever. It's about capturing/finding/exploring the 3 dimensional - form - of something that’s real, which has weight and shadow and tone, and actually exists in the real world.

You need to invest allot of time in this if you want to become good. If you only have a week i would suggest practising as much as possible then select the 4 or 5 best ones for resubmission. Only show your very best work. If your struggling with drawing basic forms then it's probably not a good idea to try and design a concept character and draw it from different angles, just work on sketching real life objects.

Pay particular attention to tone. Almost all of your work has inconsistent shading, you cant clearly tell where the light source is coming from, and this detracts from your work. Practice rendering light and shadow on the basic building blocks of form first before you move onto faces, figures etc.

example:
http://www.learn-to-draw-and-paint.com/drawing-basic-forms.html
It might seem simple but trust me it helps so much.

Hope that wasn't to harsh.

I have no idea what the Gnomon standards are, check out the link in my signature to conceptart.org though, it's the best 2d website IMO where you can also showcase your traditional art, paintings, and sketches in the sketchbook forum. You'll get very good critique there too, send me a message when you set up your sketchbook there. Good luck!

You ought to purchase Glenn Vilppu's DVD on gesture drawing. He's an absolute master, and has taught animators and artists for generations how to draw. The website isn't great, but you can see some of his work and purchase his DVDs / VHS tapes here:

http://www.vilppustudio.com/

You want to get gesture and movement, long lines going on in your drawing:

http://anatomy.cgnetworks.com/IVC%20Demos/Gesture-001.jpg

EDIT - also, what city are you in in India? Siju is in Chennai I believe:

http://thomasphoenix.cgsociety.org/gallery/409050/

he teaches (or taught) figure drawing.

Along with Vilppu's gesture DVD, I highly recommend this book:

Practice Ryder's block in method, it's terrific.

You know, it's all about sheer repetition... we can get something in our short time memory quite fast, but to get knowledge in our longterm memory usually is a lot harder.

I think you are practicing a lot and it really shows.
I think you can shade this arm just fine but you are lacking confidence to do so.
Just start hatching and think about the forms. Look up a picture of an arm on internet or in a good anatomy book if you have doubts :)

Challenge yourself! Don't be afraid to screw up a drawing... if you look at every piece you make as an exercise, you will be able to do this more easily. If you dó screw up, just put it aside and start all over again. We all learn from your mistakes.
Keep working hard, the reward will be worth it!

Good luck!
