Lildragon-- Thanks a lot. I used this site http://www.characterdesigns.com/ If you go to the photosets, you'll find a lot of photos for life drawing. I also recently bought a book called: People and Poses. (checked your sketchbook thread, I see you have this book too!:) )
Ok here's some work from a life drawing session I attended while on vacation. My scanner doesn't work so I had to take pictures.

ok something different this time.
These were inspired by Bill Sienkiewicz's old Agent of shield comic covers, and his work on the venture brothers dvd covers. Had a lot of fun imitating the watercolor look digitally.

I really like the technique of the two finished pieces and also the loose gestural sketches you have below. I think the gesture got a little bit lost in the left finished image, and the face looks a little flat. If you are interested in watercolor techniques, check out the traditional illustrator Jeff Smith:
http://www.jeffreysmithillustrator.com/index.htm
He's great at doing loose gestural work and adding splashes of color.
I had Jeff a long time ago for a figure drawing class, he's a fantastic draughtsman:

Thanks a lot for the feedback Rebeccak, and for the link to Jeff Smith.
I did a new Steampunk Star Wars character over the CONCEPT DESIGN THREAD (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=4735252#post4735252)
You can check it through the link.
Also I'm putting more of my daily sketches from my vacation. The first three I did one night I was itching to draw and couldn't go out so I took my wife's cosmo magazine. The rest were done in old San Juan.

ok kinda fell out of the bandwagon here. Been busy trying to update my website, decided to take a break and mess around with photoshop's brushes. Made some "pencil" brushes and here's the result. Don't know how long I took on this cause I kept going back and forth between the brushes and the sketch.

ok hope everyone had some good holidays. Getting back on this sketchbook, new piece came out of the blue. It had been too long since I did anything fantasyish. Still a WIP, the details aren't final. Really wanted to play around with a lot of jewelry so I might change what's there to something a bit more art nouveau(more intricate and delicate). I don't like the spearhead that much, maybe once I have a look for the jewelry the weapon can borrow on some of the design.
critiques and comments are always welcomed.

wow my last post was Oct of last year??? I'm seriously slacking. Thanks to all for the comments. Work has kept me away from my beloved thread for far too long. I've been messing around with more painterly style as of late.
Here's one I started late last year for a buddy of mine at work ( he wanted to do a sculpture out of it, but I never finished it)

Thanks for the comments guys.
NR43 -- Yeah, that's a great idea. It's looking rather flat. I like the idea just not the execution of the piece. I know I'll be going back on this later. I definitely want to make it more epic.
vikramvr -- I don't know why the pyramid head never got finished. I remember starting it once we moved into the new office. Must have gotten a lot of work that kept me from tackling this, once all that work got freed up I completely forgot about it. My buddy never reminded me of it either he must have forgotten about it.

Hey aggie93 sorry for the late reply. I made the paper with some custom brushes of mine. The line work was done with a hard brush and tablet pressure on size and opacity.
I've been taking a break from my computer since things at work had been a little hectic, but I did managed to do one quick study.

Thanks Tasp, glad you enjoy those.
Here's another study. Wanted to do something a little bit looser but still readable. Not to happy on that front, kept going back and refining it. Need to be a bit more looser and confident with future paintings. Also played more with color. Used 5 colors plus white and black for the whole piece. Critiques and comments are always welcomed.

Lovely portraits! And other stuff, of course. It seems like you're familiar with traditional media also, these digital paintings make me feel that way. Well, are you? Great to see the process of the pics.
I like the background picture you use in the sketching phase of the portraits. Is it something scanned, photographed or painted? Could you share it?
System404
04-18-2010, 08:06 PM
Thanks Razz, I used to do a lot of traditional media but once I went to college it all pretty much stopped. I've been wanting to get back into it but I don't have too much space in my condo to set a proper studio (I'm very messy.)
I'm glad my work gives you that traditional feeling, I've been struggling with photoshop for more than 7 years now trying to get it to behave like traditional media. The backgrounds you mentioned are all painted, just made them so I would never start a painting from a white background. Right now they are 2048 x 2048 patterns. Because of this they are pretty big. I made them smaller here (http://system404.net/images/blog/patterns.rar). At the very least you could make your own. Most of those backgrounds started out as me testing brushes. Hope that helps!
Thanks a lot, Marcel. I'll go make my own, don't know why I haven't done that yet. Downloaded yours, so I'll have a great example and they will sure be useful for my work.
Oh, I know, digital is just so much cleaner :) But hopefully I'll make myself pick a real brush sometime soon too.
Thanks again!

I love your portraits as well!! They are beautiful! I was having trouble painting with a similar package (Gimp) and found an alternative MyPaint (http://mypaint.intilinux.com/). It has made all the difference to me. The User interface is super simple and it has a lot of brushes and the ability to edit and make your own. It feels much more like painting.

You have some amazing work in here! Thank you for sharing it with us, and for taking the time to show us some W.I.P.s. :)
The portrait of the blond girl would be sooo awesome if not the drawing issues, looks a bit skewed. Keep flipping the image horizontally to see mistakes like that. It's always scary for me, but well worth it. And it makes me happy when I see no mistakes after flipping :) Great colors in that one also.
