View Full Version : The Dark Crusade [CG Fan Film]
10-10-2007, 08:14 PM
Hello everyone.Today after finishing some basic modelling i decided to show you what i've doing for the past few months. This project is being worked by 2 people.Me and a friend of mine who will do most of the animation and special effects.
My film is called The Dark Crusade and the main scene will be a siege.Although there will be other scenes too they will be there to help tell the story of the film.Because as you will be able to see from the pics i will upload the scale is very big we decided to focus more on the battle than do anything else.As for the script i wont reveal anything. You will have to see it when we finish.
There are many many things to do yet.We are nearly at the begining of this.So we have some rough times ahead of us.I just hope we will be able to finish it and make the film as i have it in my mind.

Ok here are the first pics with what i have done so far
Castle Trebuchet (There is another version very similar that will be used by the attacking army)
Scenery wip(We have not yet decided how it will be)
2500 soldiers test (i hope we can have around 5000 soldiers when we finish)
Castle Defender (Its wip. There still a lot to change in this model)
And here is the castle (145.000 polygons). It will be fewer when i delete many unwanted polygons

And here are some more

Hey just saw this.
Looks like a fun project and I would ask to join, but have a full plate and need my 2.5 hour sleep! Very impressive castle and it seems like a massive project.
Seems the attackers will need a Big army to storm that castle :)
Look forward to more updates.

This is looking really great! Well done on the castle and those soldiers are looking amazing. Awaiting more updates. Keep it up! :)

It looks great Viper550,
What 3D software and renderer are you using? It looks like Mental Ray to me atm. Is the battle sequence going to be rendered at night? If not I would suggest rendering the castle with a sky coloured background. That way the actual castle model WIPS you've posted so far will stand out more against the shadows etc. The scenery WIP is looking good. Is that geometry or photo composition? I love the idea of a battle sequence involving 5000 characters! How do you plan on animating all that action? You must have a seriously high spec PC.
I'll look forward to updates!
I have my own collab going atm but I'll try and help you guys out along the way. What collab help do you need?

Thanks a lot for all your comments:) .I have spent countless hours designing and modelling to get this far.It isn't easy.Your comments give me strenth to finish this one day so all of you can see it the way i imagine it.
Ok first here is a little update. This is the siege tower.
Ok for your questions now.No the battle sequence will not be at night. It will be done in full daylight.
The renderer we will use will not be Mental Ray.We will use the default scanline renderer as these pictures are.A simple Skylight with light tracer is what makes these renders look like this. But i dont think we will use light tracer for the final rendering.I just use it so the renders look better before i apply the maps to the models.
The scenery WIP is done using dreamscape. Its full geometry. No composition at all.
As for the battle itself because we obviously dont have the hardware to do freely whatever we want we must use several tricks. The most obvious is LOD.When you have an army of more than 5000 the ones far away only need very few polygons while the soldiers near the camera will have higher detail.I plan on having 2-3 variations of each model. One with high detail, one with low detail and maybe i make another with medium detail.Unfortunately although i have a good machine (core 2 duo 6700,2GB RAM,8800 GTX) it has its limits so i have to plan each scene carefully so the final picture will look as good as possible.
As for the animation its something my friend is working on.There are several tricks we can use to animate this huge battle sequence but we are in a very early stage to talk about that. When the time comes we will work on that.Of course one thing that i have to make and i will probably start next month is a pre-viz video of the whole film so i know how each scene is going to be made.It will take some time to finish but i think its the most logical step when you have a project of this magnitude.
Thanks for everyone who wants to help.At this moment we dont need any assistance but this could change in the near future as there is a huge amount of work to be done until the end.So if we need help i will have you in mind.
I hope i will have another update in the following days so until then.....keep those comments coming:bounce:

If you are interested in some ideas about how to animate this much soldiers, feel free to send me a message. Maybe I can help.

Thanks CConcepts i will contact you one of these days.Im always interested in hearing ideas and since animation is something that will take a long time to be made any trick that can help us is welcome.
And some news about the progress im making.Modelling continues with various objects that will be used in the movie.I have also started optimizing the castle model. It has many unwanted polygons and we need to have as few as we can.I have also started making the pre-viz video. It will take alot of time to be completed but i believe it will worth the effort since it will make everything a little easier later on.
Thats all for now.More news will be coming.

Not many news lately.Thats because im 100% working on finishing the pre-viz video. Its much harder that i thought but i believe it will worth it.Some of the scenes are much better than what i originally thought while others need a lot lot lot of work like the battle scenes. But its turning out great and it will definitely help us when i start the final renders.
Next time i hope to have some more pics to show.

In a couple of weeks i hope things will speed up a little bit.Progress is being made but things were very slow in the past few days.My friend is finishing some obligations he had so we will be able to move alot faster.
Finishing the pre-viz video will be our first priority but we will continue with other things too like modelling. We have to make some discussions on the animation system we will use so after the end of this month some very busy days are going to follow.

Haven't posted anything for a few months. But finally things are starting to take shape. We are working at full speed but there are so many things to do...
Ok right now im doing some texturing on the siege machines. Its not anything breathtaking but it will do the job.
My friend is working on the landscape that the battle will take form and also in some other scenes that will be included in the film.He is also experimenting in how we can blow some of the models up.And from some of the early renders i saw they will look spectacular.
We have also start gathering battle equipment like swords, axes, shields, maces, bows etc etc in order to have a library of weapons so we can have variety in what the soldiers will look like.
Tomorrow i will probably have some free time so i will try to upload some pics for you to see.

As i promised here is some of the work we are doing now
05-13-2008, 05:07 PM
I love the castle model, it's looking really good. But for a project this scale, I can't imagine doing it with only 2 people! If it were my project, I'd definitely be looking for more people to help out.
05-13-2008, 05:30 PM
Really impressive thus far. Good luck with the project.
05-14-2008, 09:34 AM
Thanks for your good words.I know that its a huge challenge for only 2 people. But the bigger the team the harder it becomes to coordinate all the members. And i had a bad experience from a previous collaboration project i started a while back here on cgtalk. It will take alot more time to finish it i know, but i think its for the best.My friend and i have complete understanding of what each other is thinking and there are no misunderstandings between us.
Well modelling is going pretty good thus far.And i dont expect to have any problems there. What worries me right now is the animation and we will have to start thinking about it as we complete the modelling phase.More news as they come. All comments are welcome....

Its been a while since the last update so i just wanted to tell everybody that we are still here and everything is going smoothly. As you can all understand with such a huge project everything is moving very slow.
We are doing many things right now.We have entered the final stage of modelling and we are working on texturing everything while doing a little bit of everything else like animation, lighting, special effects etc etc.
Animation will be a huge mountain we will have to climb and as we move forward to the moment that we will have to start doing some serious work is not far.Animation will make or break this project so i am absolutely dedicated in making it look as good as possible.
And here are some pics of our latest work.Everything is Work In Progress so alot may change until the end.

Looks great..I kinda lost hope, thought you guys gave up.Good to know I was wrong.
Well I am looking forward to some action mate ;)
If you guys need help with flow of the battle or choreography of fights or an advice or whatever feel free to let me know.I'll try to help ;)
I use Maya for posing and well basicly I create a storyboard of the sequence with all the description for speed of the moves joint position etc so that the animator works by it and in that way he has a bit easier job. :)
