Hi, this is the outcome of my last 6 months at uni (tho i did most of it in the last month -as always  ) - makes up about half of my final year project. its a short film named 'MONO' about a robot/toy thing who finds a box. you have to see it to get it really. made in 3Ds Max and a bit of after effects/photoshop/premiere. big thanks to the staff at brunel uni who helped out.

in my defence, i had never used 3d when i started this project, and we only do some basics at uni, so its been a learning thing, and it was fun to do. some of you may remember my many posts about this project and here it is at last.

the file is a quicktime mp4 so you'll need quicktime 6, which you should have by now...:shame:. theres no sound cos i didnt get time, but i'll probably do some at some point. it was originally rendered out for dvd so you do lose a bit being compressed down to 320x240, but still looks cool.

hope you like it!

download here (http://www.44t4.com/mono/mono44t4.zip) (<4mb zipped, quicktime 6)

EDIT: the link does work now!

and heres a screen...

thanks everyone, please let me know, cos i need to get opinions for a write up... yawn.

Very nice, the music wasn't necessary for me. You got your point across very well with just the animation :)

cheers, i did play with a few sound effects, but it just sounded empty cos lots of it was silent, and i am useless at writing music of any kind!

nice work.it would be better if there's sound effects with it.
i want to see more:thumbsup:

yeah, think i might spend a couple of days and just put some simple sounds on. found a couple of useful sound effects sites.

but more opinions would be nice!

stereo killer, nice, i like that. how do you mean about expressions? i tried to give some 'acting' through the eyes, or the eye brows. its kinda hard to see tho when its small. much more obvious when its on a tv. idea was to give feelings to something with very little to animate.

cheers

keep em coming.

very nice!
i would like to see more parts falling to the ground for a longer amount of time, but other than that its awesome!

cheers, i know what you mean about the end bit with the falling parts, but that is actual the right amount. made using a particle system of fragments of the red robots body. might put another one in that 'explodes' a couple of seconds later.

glad you like it. its been my life for the last month so it means alot

cheers

that's great! There is the right nuber of "parts" but maby some of them should bounce more. And even if you used the parts from the shell of the red guy there would probably be a LOT more parts on the inside...gears, nuts screws, metal things, etc that should bounce around.

It would work much better with some music as well, but its nice the way it is as well.

agreed. going back to put a few more things to blow up, forgot about cogs. might do an eye or two. as for sound i've done about 80% of sound effects but havent got a clue about music. need a composer to score me something:shrug:

Hey there :)

Nice work! I have a few suggestions though which you may like to try out. The bounce on the little blue guy seems a little laboured and a tad soft. I read him as a small character so he could be quite spritely. At the moment he seems to go ...bounce...pause...bounce...pause...bounce... etc. It would be great to see him go ...bounce...bounce...bounce..!!! Just take out a few frames of the compression. Try making the leg completely straight as he jumps off the ground and exagerate pointing the toes at the ground more and perhaps make him land more on his heel and slam the foot down over 1 frame. I noticed just as the foot leaves the ground it lifts a little and then accelerates up. Try getting rid of the little lift, make the foot move up the most on this first frame of the lift. A similar thing happens just before the foot hits the ground, keep it quite high and slam it down over 1 frame. These little adjustments could hopefully make the hop a bit sharper. Some secondary follow through on the head would be nice and could add a some character to the little chap. The big red guy needs more weight. At the moment as he lifts each leg he would really fall over, there's no motion to keep him upright. Try introducing some side to side motion moving his body over the right leg as he lifts the left and try rolling and rotating the body to give some character.

These are all just suggestions, once you get them in action they may not look right or work at all!

Oh jeez...I hope you don't mind me giving you these pointers, it must sound that I'm being hypercritical. This is the type of thing animators get all the time at work, it's part of the job.

You say that this is your first piece of 3d? Well I hope you're proud of it! This is a fine piece of work and thanks for posting it!

cheers

haha! that's a funny animation! I think it's maybe too slow, sometimes, but i'm severe.

wow, cheers for little write up. i agree with what you said Wes, one of the main reasons for the animation looking that way is that i animated it at 30fps, then realized and switched it too 25fps. this is the first thing i've ever tried to animate, so its cool to get feedback. spent quite a while on the walk (or hop) cycle for the blue guy, had a couple faster, a couple slower, but choose this one as it was the most realistic one i'd done. i basically animated him bouncing on the spot, then animated his root accordingly, hence it looks a little off. the bigred dude was a bit off i know, hence i only showed him from the front. found it real hard to give him the feel of weight.

too late now tho, hand in in 2 weeks, and i've a write up to do!

been working on a sound track too, just sfx but think it really adds to it.

cheers for the replies.
