I couldn't decide so I did kind of a Photoshop collage ranking. Seriously I was blown away by the amount of cool concepts!!

Danielh68's Hank concept was the most appropiate to me. Thank you :)

heh, I like your method of choosing. Very methodical. Any ideas on how you'll be handling the fur? I shied away from werewolves for just that reason, so you're very brave to take it on!

hey DDS,

good start, i hope you wont be finish next week

danielh89, the artist, will do some orthographic views over the weekend, which i asked him for. yesterday he gave a positive reply and today i saw you already working on the concept. i decided to use the hank concept anyway, because it's just too cool to let go :)
i hope you dont get angry about it. i can assure you that i can hardly reach your level.

good luck!

edit: question to your workflow: if i got it right, you're modelling the polygonal base-mesh just for reference in zb, but not for scultping on it, right?

DDS
10-13-2007, 04:08 PM
OneToe. 1st of all, thanks! Secondly, you and me are all equals that will try to achieve one goal, that's all it matters in the competition :) Also regarding to your question, I did a zsphere chain coz it's the easier way of getting something rolling. Then fixed the resulting mesh and finally I re-topologized with Zbrush tools. After that I bring it to Max and check mesh is fine, chamfer some edges and tweak some proportions and then bring it back Zbrush. This is all in 1 or 2h even if it sounds really long lol :D

Wow, you're really powering through this! I love the detail, and it seems like you're getting quite a bit of definition, considering you're not up to truly high poly counts yet. Seems like the re-topolgize tool is really coming in handy in ZB3. Can't wait to see more!

Looking cool, man! My only comment at this point is that the original concept doesn't show enough character. Use those badass ZB3 posing skills you have been toying around with and bring him to life in a spook-tacular way! (Sorry about that, I've always wanted to use "spook-tacular" in a sentence.) ;)

Wait I've got an idea. Come to the party as this guy, and we'll have a 3-way brawl between Lara, Indiana, and Wolfman. Delhi isn't big enough for the 3 of us!!

Here is my new update. Just a bit more work on Zbrush. Since this subd level already has a lot more density, it will take me more time to finalize. C&C are really welcome :)

no doubt this is genious.

could you explain more about your further plans? how will you manage regions which go from hair to hairless skin?

sculpting at neck and throat seem to stay undetailed relativly to other parts; i assume no further detailing is neccesary there because of hair density? at this stage the eye demands better blending from human to werewolf, but this may be ignored according to later hair / fur operations.

hands and arms are fantastic! maybe the rips need a bit more refinement and the muscles at the side of his back under his shoulders (hope you know which i mean, need a chart :]) could be wider to optically strengten his shoulders in general. this would help for the blending i spoke of, too.
you reached a very powerful attitude!

keep it goin,

I use a really lower subdivision level of the geometry to do the hair and fur :). I will map the density of the hair to fade in/out. (Hair and Fur has that feature). Also I will probably add different objects for the different hair of the different zones, then attach it to the main geo using skin wrap from max.

Also, parts covered completely with fur are irrelevant to me in terms of modeling. This gotta be fast. I wanna texture him and setup a crappy rig by End of Challenge.

Worked on face/hand details. Quite some work left, but it's being kinda fun.

Nice progress.
I think the head looks a bit more bat-like than lupine, maybe even hyena-esk. The ears are far too fleshy to me, and don’t tend toward a fold at the base the way auricles (pinnas) do on non-primate mammals. I like the human remnant shown in the cleft chin. I assume the bulgy ridges around the neck represent the base for a thick mane of fur?
—Looking forward to the finish.

I agree with your crits. I'm a big fan of your HCM entry for the animals in action. But I'm not so familiar with animal anatomy and my english is still a bit limited. Is it possible for you to get me a photorreference of what you mean about the folds at the base of the ears? It would be extremely appreciated man!!

edit: oh, and also I hope you are aware of the concept drawing, which kicks ass but might be inaccurate at the same time, in terms of realism? But still I wanna give credit to the artist and do it his way. But still, I think you are mentioning other stuff that has nothing to do with that. So your help is still strongly appreciated!

Quadart

I guess I was too caught up with the nice work you did so far and forgot to refer to the concept drawing for the head appearance. I just think the ears on your model are too thick from front to back. Here are a few links showing dog ears to show what I mean about the fold:

Very sweet progress!

As far as the fur goes, imho it looks a bit too even on the body, more like a carpet and could use some variation, but I am guessing you are already working on that as well as making the transition of hair between head and body more even in length and color. Currently it looks as if the head doesnt really belong to the body.

Anyways, just minor crits. Keep up the superb work!

Looking pretty awesome. Loving the hair updates, and whether or not he's anatomically correct, he's looking pretty convincing. As someone already mentioned, I really like the way you're retaining human features in the face, rather than doing it the typical way of just sticking a strictly wolf head on a human body.

Can't wait to see more!

Lordrych
10-22-2007, 03:42 PM
I would say I definitely love the way he is looking, the only problem I see is with the fure the way it is, you are loosing all that detail you sculpted in him. But then again you said your going to use density map for the fur so most likely you will take care of that. I can't wait to see more.

If you do have time I would love if you could write a small tutorial on the hair, as there isn't a good one out there for 3d max, and I am working on a Minotaur and want to cover him in hair also. And I never could figure out how to used maps to do the density on the fur.

Hair looks great in the short amount of time!

although the body hair needs to be randomized abit, some tufts of longer fur in some places should also help from the current look. (which feels like short and maintained/combed)

Certainly an excellent piece. No doubt one of the favorites. Yet, I can't help but feel that the face is beginning to become more "bore-like" than "wolf-like". I realize your intention was to maintain the human aspect in him - hence the areas of uncovered skin - but wolves have fur all over their faces and quite a different jaw line than the on you've molded. Check out pictures of wild bores - the ear shape, headshape, jaw line, fur topography and even the eye ball of yours are very alike. At the moment, I'm not really seeing a werewolf.

Just something to think about, I guess. Wonderful none the less. I love your WIP!

DDS
11-13-2007, 08:33 PM
Sorry, it's been a while! Thanks for the latest feedback :) Now I gotta crunch

Hepatic, I'm being as close to the concept as possible. I liked it the way it was :) Even if it's not very wolf like, I do think It was Werewolf like. Anyways gotta say the face structure follows the wolf skull as much as I could...In conclusion, I have no time to change sh*t now :(

OneToe, I think I won't have time for doing the orthos, but u will c them in 3 days for the final presentation :)

I need to rework the torso and arms because I won't use fur in there, add tons of detail and equipment, and pose him!! Lots to do :buttrock:

oh dang! nice repliesss. I agree with the hair in the chest, it's next thing to do after I finish resculpting the torso.

For now I show what can be an almost finished version of the lower body. It needs some polishing in terms of mesh. Right now it's kinda messy with lots of triangles and ngons....:D

someone asked why cloth in subd straight away, without zbrush. Challenge is supposed to do a mesh that rigs...that's why. Also I learn more by doing it this way.

hi DDS, your result is brilliant. I knew this concept had potential - and you've shown it! i liked the clay shader renderings more than the final, but that might be just me preferring those. the pose and the anatomy express the style of the concept very well. after you came out with the fantastic upper body i didnt expect the boots and stuff to be anything impressing - but they are! the trousers, the boots, the belt.. surely done with low amounts of time but fitting perfectly. would be nice to know more about your progress creating those. o course there are things to crit, but that tiny that they dont blur the style. i would recommend to do several lighting tests for better presentation of this char. thank you for commenting my progress.

While you made a few changes from the concept, which I think improved on it, you also made some which I think are really missing now, but that's just minor details and irrelevant for such a challenge.

I told you, you were gonna win this. Just wait and see. :)

DDS,

I have to apologize to you, as I did Samar, that I completely forgot about the competition until this morning when the winner was announced on the front page.

What can I say? Your work leaves me speechless. I'm awed and in disbelief you were able to take a fairly crude concept and evolve it into something as special as this. Seeing this kind of amazing wizardry makes me feel like a little kid at a magic show. Your work is extraordinary and I'm honored that my small part played a role in your inspiration. Bravo and congratulations:thumbsup:

Just a couple highlights: your anatomy is spot-on and I love how the weight is shifted to the one leg in the figure. It's such a fantastic pose, full of badass-attitude!:)

DDS terrific work and another congrats on the win.
Loving the sense of humour in it as well..

I'm a bit of a newb in Cg and wanted to ask about the lighting you used in the final image?
It really looks good and dramatic so just wanted to ask if you'd share some and tell how you set the lighting up?

Cheers
