Well. is the meshmodel made in max/maya or some other 3d package?
Then first check you uv map in your 3D package. Check if the uv's are in 0 to 1 space.
then export the mesh again in .obj for zbrush to import.
then go to Zbrush where you have your highpolygon character already opened up.
go to the lowest division (so practicly your base mesh). Now you can RE-import your new exported model and it will rewrite your current model.
-now you still have all the details in the higher subdivisions
-your UV's are now updated because of your new imported mesh.
this way there is a possability that your UV's are being recognised again.
I hope it can help you:)

side note that there has a weird (bug maybe) problem if you imported obj from xsi, you'll notice that zbrush will break each polygon apart. To fix it, you export obj from xsi -> import into maya -> stitch them back together-> re-export from maya as obj-> import to zbrush will solve this problem
