James Gurney (author and illustrator of the Dinotopia series) recently (i.e. 3 months ago, heh) started his blog.
In it he not only talks about his journey across the US to promote the books and meet with artists, students and readers, but also enlarges upon sketching, landscape painting, modelling references (the kind of 3D you can touch...:D ) and doing research for his designs.
I could tell you I was absolutely thrilled to see that and take a glimpse at most of the topics, but don't believe me, coz I am a hopeless fanboy.

P.S.: if you have the time check out the quotes from fan letters on the dinotopia website (http://www.dinotopia.com/fanzone.html)- most of them by kids and they're downright hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time!
