Hey,
This is a quick composition I put together in a day to place a character wip i am working on into a semi-real environment. This is really my first attempt at doing something like this, so more than anything its an experiment. I know I need to do a better job of matching the lighting. Anyway, give me any comments if you think I could use em. Thanks.

well the comp isnt too bad, the shadows are a little harsh...but the lighting is close, little bit purplish though...

Thankyou for the comment, I appreciate it. Could someone venture to be more specific? Its fine, just tell me what I am doing wrong.

Hmmm it's a bit hard to explain but I will give it my best shot.

Composition-wise in my humble opinion could do a little better. The far right side seems a tad bit empty. Perhaps if the man was walking towards us, except he would be leaning somewhat to the right, things might look a little better.

The tent's umbrella looks a little too cut out & clean on the left edge.

The computer's color needs to be a little toned down, perhaps disaturate the colors a little more (?)

And the woman.... She doesn't seem like she's suffering like the other guy. LOL She seems to be walking in the dust cloud like shes taking a stroll in the park. Perhaps if she looked like she was resisting the wind more, it'd be much better.

Question: What's with her see through tank top? LOL

I hope my comments are not offending you. Just an honest feedback. I understand it's a rough. :) I like what you're trying to do though. ;)

Thankyou for your response. Im not offended at all, I need comments like these, its the only reason I bother to post any work. So:
1) Make the top less see-through   ?
2) Make the girl fighting the wind, maybe add a flowing piece of clothe to show the effect of the wind on her?
3) Layout the objects more even to make the composition more balanced?

Will these things help a lot does everyone think? And is it worth my effort to conitnue on this idea? Did anyone pick up on the floating ship in the background on the left? You can basically only see the soft outline and shine of th front lights due to the fog/sandstorm.

I don't have much to add, except, maybe if you dressed the woman more like the man.

Also I don't understand why, if it's a Desert Warfare scene, she would be wearing a tanktop (see through or otherwise) and very short shorts while the guy behind her looks like he's wearing a heavier outfit.

Other than the other people's comments and these, Looks pretty good.

Two reasons for the top:
a) I like the odd conflict that occurs from placing things that usually dont belong together, in the same arena. A number of months ago I posted an image of a room in a church ( presumably lived in by a priest based on the surroundins ), a table in the foreground, and a bible on the table. But the bible was a e-book/palmpilot reader. Everything else in the setting was very 'old-fashioned', very conservative and roman-catholic. I liked the conflict that the technology of an electronic bible made with the tradition and age of an old church. In this case, I am taking a look at the mix of sexuality and war.
b) The desert is hot, and with what she is wearing, she'll remain cool.

Anyways, it seems that female nudity is acceptable only if it acts as entertainment, or art. And for that matter, female nudity in art seems to be regarded as something for men ( aka- when someone posts art with full nudity/sexuality, men emmediately flock to take a look, and then comment that the females on cgtalk might be offended by the image ), so it can again be seen as entertainment. What if feminine nudity didn't always have to be a tool of entertainment, but sometimes just served a practical purpose.

I realise that my piece of 'art' doesnt necessarily apply strongly to my case, but I'm just giving food for thought.... keep safe and healthy everyone.

Technically in a desert environment loose layers of thin clothing keep you cool, not stripping off and wearing almost nothing. Has to do with evaporation of sweat and sun heat if you want to get into it- I understand why you might want to put a woman in a see through top in a scene for 'art' or art purposes, but in cooling terms she will hit the deck from heatstroke quicker than someone of a comparable size weight and physical fitness wearing appropriate clothes. Her semi nudity can therefore have no practical purpose as you suggest, but I think as a conflict of imagery it works rather well. If she had no mask and was thus immune to whatever is poisoning the masked and clothed guy by not having covered up at all, it would make more sense to me in conflicting image terms, but there you go.

I see what you're saying Waters. Very good idea and it makes more sense to me now.

If that's the case you would need to reaaaally blend her in to the enviroment, so instead of the picture being out of place it should be the "idea" of a nude girl that's out of place and ironic.

If anything, to enhance the irony perhaps she should be looking in to a small cosmetics mirror with the gas mask still on. LOL

Personally I like the idea very much, and like to see this idea come to shape. :) Cheers
