It's a compression opton for Windows video files(avi).
But I would NOT recommend it if you plan to process your footage furthermore.

DO NOT use the Indeo codec. It is total crap and your files will look horrible. If you need an alpha channel in your files, the best option out there is to use a Quicktime file with the "Animation" codec.
You should get over your desire to work with AVIs. Even if you are a PC user, AVis are NOT necessary. In virtually every studio I have worked, Quicktime is THE format used for everything from beginning to end. In addition, Quicktimes are Mac and PC compatible, whereas AVIs will not work on the Mac without special software since they are technically a Windows Media format. Should you ever need to share your work or project with someone on a Mac, AVIs will cause you a lot of problems.

It's a great question and reminds me of me a couple of years back trying to fathom out the mysterious "alpha channel" and other video queries working on the PC platform.
Just use Quicktime all the time in Animation with Millions+ colours (Rgb+Alpha) option and as previously mentioned Avi is a horrible codec and seemingly quite destructive.
