Man, I really don't know about this movie.
I've tried to read TGC several times, and have never been able to keep momentum past when Lyra meets the Gyptian lords, it just doesn't hold my interest.
On the other hand, the film looks pretty cool, and even parts I have read look totally different than I pictured them, and generally in a good way. I like Daniel Craig, and the CG looks pretty good -- nothing stood out as fake and animals can be tough to do. But some of the acting (the climactic "I don't belong to you!" or whatever the exact line is) just looks abysmal.
Like I said, I just don't know what to think.

I'm beyond excited for this movie... but I'm disappointed in a few things. One, they completely changed Iorek's voice actor to Ian Mckellen, who of course I love... but it doesn't work. They gave up a great actor in exchange for one who will sell tickets? I just dont understand why they would do that 2 months before the movie comes out. That, and Chris Weitz just wrote a letter to the fans saying they're cutting the final three chapters from the film... which will make it a solid movie that stands on it's own. And that's fine, I don't really hve a problem with that, it will be happier and audiences will like it more. But it probably mean's we won't see the trilogy finalized.
I'm going to see it anyway, my love for these books surpasses my doubts about the movie.

I read the trilogy but going by these trailers its not the world I envisaged apart from maybe the ice kingdom in the north, can't really go wrong there. I got much more of a dark feel to the novels. A gritty steampunk Oxford with a combination of the olden days and futuristic mechanics.
Anyhow, this trailer looks like the best of them so far. No doubt be a classic case of the books better so I advise you to read Northern Lights (non of this Golden Compass malarky :P) before seeing the film.
I really like the previous trailers...
Does anyone know who've done the particles coming out of the alethiometer and how?
They look great...
Thanks

That trailer was the best they've shown so far. It's clear for those that haven't read the book, while keeping the excitement.
Awesome.
You know what? At least I'm glad the book had such a threatment. It coul'dve ended badly, or way worse.

That's because you haven't gotten to the second and third books which are far more mature and intense than the first book, which plays more like a child fantasy book. The later books are very adult in some respects and the story definately takes a huge turn later on with sexual, nd religious content to spare. Though I like the second book the best, the first one is my second favorite, trust me when you get past the gyptian king part you will see hwat the big deal is, this book is like no other, imo.

I definately agree with you on this. I envisioned something more like a steam punk feel with dirt and grime and everything being more gritty. The problem is that the first book plays so much like a children's fantay book that the movie wa probably made d marketted more for your average 12 year old. I think that it was a mitake, imo, because the rest of the books are very dark and the world should have been established correctly from the beginning. I personally don't think they will do the rest of the series because there would be too many concessions made in-order for them to be more pc. I personally like the fact the movies like Harry Potter have an arc and have gottne darker and more mature as they get deeper into the series, but I don't it would work with the Nothern Lights series.

It looks good, but I really dislike the simplifying the alethiometer to the 'golden compass' which was a title never wanted by Pullman and only called that in the US. Not once in any of the books is it called that, but, aside from that, the daemons look great, Iorek looks good though I agree, Ian McKellen's voice is a bit odd, just too epic and not gruff enough. I'll see it, but i'm not holding my breath for an amazing adaptation.

Where is everyone getting the idea that Ian Mckellen is voicing Iorek? Are you sure you aren't confusing him with Iofur who is being voiced by Ian McShane?

Well, quite apart from the fact that you can clearly hear it's him in the trailer, you mean?
McKellen is doing Iorek's voice. It was a last minute change.

I didn't even notice. What a shit thing to do. Ian Mckellen really doesn't come to mind when you think "huge armoured bear that f's shit up". Lame. He would've been right for Boreal maybe but Iorek.. no.
