View Full Version : cutting edges in 3dsmax 5
daredevil 04-08-2003, 09:14 PM I asked this in another thread but i guess it will get better attention in it's own thread.... maybe an idea for an "newbie central thread"?
anyways im having the following problem, i did some 3dstudio max5 tutorials, from the tutorials they provided, and im currently trying to do the "fiat 500" tutorial from karabo (http://www.dutch-gamers.nl/~karabo/.../car/page4.html) is the place i am right now, and he is talking about making ur plane split in half by making a cut from the top edge to the bottom edge.
Only problem is in the turorial says that it should be split right in the middle now but i can't align the "cutline" in the middle, what am i doing wrong?
Sorry for my bad english by the way....

sounds like you want to connect edges, unless you have max 5 you will need to download meshtools

i have 3dsmax 5, but when i'm using the cut-tool, it will only cut on the existing vertices and not in between, what the tutorial states.. :hmm:

from memory you could use a slice plane, or the cut tool (under edge selection). think thats right. the cut tool is really useful.

mmm i already figured that one out, cuz the tutorial also says to use the "cut-tool", but when i try to cut it, it will uses the vertices that i already have as a reference, so for example when is should have a square i can cut it diagonal, and on the left, right, bottom and top side(which isnt much usefull cuz with the last 4 u arent cutting a thing) but not horizontal and vertical
I hope u can understand what i mean

You should use the connect tool as suggested earlier.
All you need to do is pick all the edges in a ring that you want to split and then hit the connect button. You can choose how many times to divide the edges in the rollout. Very simple and very powerful tool.

Hmm, It seems you have got "Snap" turned on. Go and check snap tool if its set up correctly.
For cuting edges in the middle, go for edge sub selection mode, select desired edges and hit connect. When using Cut tool you can also turn on/off "Snap Tool" (icon of magnet at the top of UI).
It should be clear now:D

Nice to hear you solved your problem:) Its allways good to know that effort to help had reason!
P.S. The snap tool is a powerful helper! I rely on it quite often.
