View Full Version : SSS rendering problem
lhitch 10-08-2007, 09:18 PM OK, this is bizarre. I've never seen anything like this before. I'm getting some sort of repeating pattern in the texture, and either additional banding or the banding is caused by the repeating pattern. I've tried disconnecting the bump and spec maps so that I've only got an epidermal, a subdermal and a subdermal weight map. I've turned off the filters on the texture maps. No difference.
I don't even know where to start trouble shooting this. Anyone ever seen something like this before? Any suggestions?

increase your lightmap texture size and lightmap samples

my guess it's the size of the SSS back and front
you need to adjsut the Algorthim control
there are many tutorials that cover that

Bingo! That was it. Thanks, Ovendelon, that did the trick. I increased the texture map from 50 x 50 to 500 x 500, and the samples from 64 to 256. Any suggestions on what good typical values for these settings are?

if i remember right the X size should be 2 times the render res, and the y as the render res, but i may be wrong :) someone should correct me

I was working from a tutorial that said to make both the X and the Y the same size as the scene in scene units. My character is about 20 units high, so I made the texture file 50 x 50. Not nearly enough
The render resolution was set at 1024, but 500 for the texture file seemed to work OK.
Here's the final result.
