Hi there... well, I started modeling this cool car a week ago, and I got to this point (well, note that I can model only in my spare time so it's about 2 hrs per day :annoyed: )

Ok, here are my pics...

ok and please help me, I can't decide what wheel rims rather to model?! So here I post the pic of several types of rims, so please be so kind as to tell me what one do you prefer the most...

Thank you...

That's some great progress! Thx for sharing it with us
http://www.ribin.net/gal/2003/03.html
You've probably already seen that one but it's awesome.
I also like the star-spoke weels.
Could you tell me where did you get the reference blueprints?

wow! it's coming out so perfect and clean ! what software do you use and how are you modeling this ? is it splines, polys ??
can you show a bit on how you go about modeling...thx

loocas
04-08-2003, 07:08 PM
To r0bal: Wow, nope, haven't seen it! Well, but I know Ribin... he's awesome! But, note, that this BMW is modeled in 3ds max properly from plane throught editable polys!!! So no Rhino used! And another note: this is just main aspect of final scene! I will be doing really BIG scene for this! just wait to see more pls... :p

As for the blueprints... one day when the weather was pretty bad, I went to the BMW dealer and asked there for big brochure of BMW 7 Series... so they gave it to me... there are lots of reference materials, blueprints included! :bounce:

loocas
04-08-2003, 07:15 PM
To sebek27: I use 3ds max 5.1 only for the modeling and finalRender stage-0 v.1.4 for the rendering. Well, here are some pics straight from max to see how I did it... As I mentioned earlier I work with polygons only, so very long distance job here ;)

Good stuff. Smooth lines, almost rival Rhino nurbs!

Do you just do poly-by-poly or use splines for guides or what?
Need more details.

Nice work, this model is coming out really good. especially impressive that its all with editable poly's... I wonder if all car brochures come with blueprints ...

Ahoj loocas!

Looking good so far. Very smooth and very detailed... looks promising! The mesh itself also looks very clean, don't see many poles or other poly distortions. Keep us posted on your progress!

To Duffman: Čauves  (well, I don't drink beer at all, but you're right we have great beer all over the world  ) Anyways thanks for the comments...

To others: Thank you too, well, this evening I'll be finishing the exterior, it means I'll do the window rims, door handles, windows and lights... Next time (mybe tomorrow) will start modeling the wheel rim, well, I've not decidet yet what type to model?? But I really prefer that upper left type... but in 19" :scream:

Thank you...!

Duffman
04-09-2003, 07:35 PM
looking at the rims, I actually really like the Multi-spoke 94. I think if you're going for 19" rims, the Styling 80 wouldn't look too great.

Then again, you could always try a rim design of your own, or check out some catalogs for inspiration and maybe mix some styles together.

Here's little update... I worked primarily on door, but I did several details on it too...

As for the wheel rims... I'll model STYLING 80 in 19" version and also STAR-SPOKE 92 also in 19"... Then you will help me with the decision ok? ;)

Anyways... thanks a lot!

excellent work with the polymodeling. Can we have a wireframe and some quick hints on the extremely well sharp detail , maybe an close up ?

Good Luck with finishing the model.

I bumped this to get a reply about the modeling workflow.

This can't be just straight poly-extrusions without guides, right?
It's too smooth.

loocas
04-11-2003, 02:05 PM
To lragno: Sure that's only extrusions of specific shapes! No guide lines no NURBS no splines no nothing, just "simple" Poly editing :)

04-13-2003, 05:50 PM
Hi there... well, I had just a little time this weekend :annoyed: but I found some time to work on rims... Yeah, I know you all asked me to model Star-Spoke 92 rims, but I don't like theyr design at all! Althought I modeled the rim, but becouse of inssuficient amount of references for the rims the mesh is not as clean as I'd expect from it... so because of this I will model the Styling rims (but 19" ver.)... Hope I didn't make anybody angry of this, but you must understand that I want the very HIGH quality model!

Are you planning on modeling an interior too?
I say go all out!

loocas
04-15-2003, 06:25 PM
To Duffman: Sure I'll model an interior, but limited LOD! 'coz it will be seen from the strickt angle and lots of tiny details would be just wasting of time to model!

Thanks to all of ya! The whole exterior should be done this weekend...

loocas
04-18-2003, 11:14 PM
Well, time to another update... I finished whole exterior (except lots of touch-ups and finishing the details...) and next time I'll be doing interior and wheels. Final stage will cover materials, scene setup and lighting... And after that I'll do the final whole scene in cg and compose this car into it... Ok, that's sweet song of the future, let's get to the point :D

Thats looks like a pretty high poly count for the non meshsmoothed version, you probably could have done it with alot less polygons. (I do anyway)

i just have to say, dont the refference planes get in your waywhen you are working in perspective? they do for me, what i do is just move them far back so you can still see them in the orthographic views and not see them in perspective

also, the body material lookks too shiney oe something, usually i use color correct to make the hdri greyscale, and the contrast very high if im going for that "photoshoot" look like in magazines

its a bit reflective, remeber car paint as a translucent layer of paint that catches light and spreads it out more, so kinda work on your car shader a bit more... also your lighting righwork needs work.

I don't like the rims... Don't know why but probably then same reason why flipper kun didn't like them.

Although the reflections are too strong and I think that they should be more blured as Bitmap said. Look at the photos at bmw.com (http://bmw.com)
The spokes in the rims are aslo a bit to thin and they shouldn't have such rough edges, smooth them a bit.

The modelling of your car is great loocas, but the textures deffo need some work. I'm not the best person to give advice on texturing cars but maybe try adding noise to the reflections and poss play around with some different colours. You seem to be losing all of the detail you have put into the model.

Great modelling tho:thumbsup:

The car paint needs some attention though. I'd suggest playing the white point of the HDRI you're using, try to make it less reflective where there's less light.

So how about that interior? Good luck!

To reeves1984: Ok, thanks for the suggestion, I'll do my best, but during the finishing process, when all colors of the car will be fitting together!

Otherway THANK YOU!

Hey, so far I like your model alot! I love the new 7 series!! Anyways, as for the wheels, my favorites are the ones you had in the bottom right corner of the picture of the different wheels you posted. As for the headlights...they do sorta float there, but something does look a little odd about them, although it might just be a material or something; I can't really tell. I can't wait to see the finished model!

To woadiestyol: Yepp, thanks! For headlights... don't worry about that... they look odd, 'coz of the lack of the exterior models surrounding the bmw. I tried to add some models around the bmw and the headlights looked absolutelly different! So, you'll see on the final picture the difference... as for the wheel rims... I'll model ones from the new bmw 5 series catalogue I got recently :scream: maybe I'll model this one car too, but later... Ok, so thanks a lot!

Hi guys, well I have this couple of renders where I modified the main shader, logos, rear lights and some details, currently I'm finishing the interior, but have no renders of it, so be patient and "stay tuned" :wavey:
Here's the couple, enjoy:

Have you put that flammable thing on the hood centered on the hood and seen how it looked? It looks like you messed up on the texture right now to me (but I know you didnt)

Hey those headlights look alot better in these renders, maybe it was just a funny angle before. Looks good, can't wait to see the rest!

WOW, mesh looks perfect. How did u get such reflections?

loocas

To GateKeepeR: Yes I tried to put the flammable logo centered on the hood, but it looked very simple, almost funny, so I changed the position of the logo and I was fiddeling with this for very long time, I don't see the messed up textures you mentioned  Please be more concrete.

To woadiestyol: I told ya it was 'coz of lack of the environment ;)

To Orbitronio: What do you mean by "Such reflections"? it's almost simple, but it took very long time setting up the shader to look it properly to me :)

Anyways thanks a lot!

To reeves1984: Heh :D , I hate this cheq texture too, but what can I do if I need to test my shader's reflections!

your paint material is way too reflective on surfaces pointing towards the camera.

I really like the process that you've taken. Excellent to it from start to getting close to finish. Keep up the good work. These posts can really be a good educational tool.

Do you plan it in a different colour? IMHO the black is hiding a lot of detailes.

Thanks for your comments!

To qu2k: Yes, I know, but wait till I add some surrounding environment... It's radically different! ;)

To pettles: I do really love to show my progress as detailed as I can, 'coz I'm glad when others can learn something from me

To Nosalis: Yes, I plan to change the color, but I need this dark grey for commercial use, after that I'll try blue, red etc...

So thank you again!

Today I worked on matching the camera in 3d space and I can say it was much harder than my previous composition (Lego Van), because of env I chose! Hope I'll finish it this week (I have some other work to do...) Well, thaks for your favour guys! :wavey:
