Hi all - I am a newbE to this forum . Is there any 1 out there who can help. As i am a student (first year at uni) i need to create some models (as i am doing games production - programming, 3d s max, design (unreal Ed 3.0 etc). i needed some BASIC tutorials on how to create a Snowman, a penguin and an Igloo. Thanks all.

And your instructors can't provide you with info?

Other than the obvious the next best thing would be using the tutorials & help files included with max. Everything you mentioned can be achieved with simple primitives and some tweaking.

i know where your coming from with lecturers, but really, you need to just experiment with the program, with primitives and editable polys and stuff. much better than just finding a tutorial on the exact thing you need. if you want tutorials hit the ones in max help are good, and theres millions on the web. check out the topic stuck to the top of this forum.

hope that helps, and good luck, i finish uni in 2 months, sheeesus.

you will prpably not find tutes to help you model every single thing, the trick is to learn the app and know when to use what to model what

look for meshsmooth tutes as a start and apply the method to your projects...you wont need meshsmooth as your games modelling but the poly editing lessons it will teach you will be useful

Yes thanks all, for your advice. I hope u finish with a good grade from uni :bounce: . Just wanted to ask a few things.
1st - Is there a lot of job oppertunities for 3d artsist in the UK
2nd - I am more of the C++ programmer. this is what i enjoy in uni as i have been at it for the 4th year going. will it be an advantage for me to learn 3d s max, because i hopefully want to go on to 3d games programming after uni (e.g) - Direct X, PS2 platform and the PC . or not ?- again thanks for the replies :wavey:
PS - this forum looks a lot like the www.rage3d.com/ (rage3d)- forum. LOL:applause:

Why not send a message to some developers and ask if you'd follow this 'route' you would be well on your way for a job at a 'fantastic' company like theirs ?

Believe me, you'll get an answers 99% of the time from someone who can exactly tell you if they would be able to use someone with that kind of knowledge and if you are doing the right thing. :)

well..i can only hope i get where u at now...in terms of programming i mean..heh...

i'm still in gr 11 high school but going to part-time college for courses in max/maya etc is really fun..

and not to mention i was lucky enough to be picked by Microsoft to work on their XBOX sports titles from a player's view(aka ideas for features, graphics, etc) and so far that's been good.

next step for me should be another course in college and a co-op placement in grade 12 at a studio in toronto(hopefully)...

which begs the questions...do you guys know how many studios are in toronto? (aka a link to a site or something).

i've found a few but you never know when you might need more...

PS: good luck to ya!

Hopefully codemasters or some thing like that. just need to concentrate on 3d s max. (I am really rubbis at it) - cant even make a snowman and an igloo. :thumbsdow oh well i will try and solve it. again thanks all - i feel much better:thumbsup:

dont woryy..i cant make an igloo either...lol...you just gotta think of the problem in parts..like for 1...

igloo-ice..ice-reflection/opacity/density ->reclection->go find ice IOR(which is 1.309 i think)
opacity-> trim it down till u like it(easy to do)
density..i dunno about this but you can ask the pro's

okay..then..

take a sphere..make it a semi-sphere and you got your shape(well...fairly)...you go and play with poly's or vertices, etc till you go your best shape.

then you can get the "yellow' brick map and transform it into a blue-ice color(dunno if you need anything like photoshop or u can do it in the material editor-i think u may be able to do it)

then apply that to the semi-sphere with a bump map along side and some reflection/refraction stuff and there you go.

If you wanna make it look even better...then u gotta go look for tuts or ask these guys how u can. U just gotta break the steps down...and dont try to do 5 things at the same time...thats what really put a stop when i bearly started something...but then again i'm only a novice..

as for a penguin..well..i didnt try to do an living stuff because its too complex for me for now but it shouldn't be that hard...it'll take time but you'll get it:buttrock:
