hi,

i just finished my 4th semester soloproject "lucy's room" at the
GERMAN FILM SCHOOL. it took 5 months to complete. but i also had classes, so i had to work in the evening and at the weekend.
i used XSI, photoshop and afterfx.

the story is about a little robot (yes, we guys at the GFS like robots, but when i started i didn't know anything about DRONEZ), which lives lonely on a spacestation. he was once the best friend of a small girl, but something went wrong...
and it lives through the day, when the catastrophe happend, again and again.

here you can download the movie:

lucy's room (zip,18mb, divx503) (http://www.krappel.net/lucysroom.zip)

on my homepage there are some hires pics from the project and the robot:

www.krappel.net (http://www.krappel.net)

ok, that's so far. hope you like it (and understand),

moe

p.s.: sorry about my english

Wow, great models. Downloading the short right now. One thing: there's a little typo on your site in the menu : "POJECTS" instead of "PROJECTS"

Amazing work, it saddens me that I am not at your level, but I will continue to work, so that maybe soon I can be. Skills aside, I like the topic and mood of your animation. As a crit, I think you could do more with the voice of the robot, and you might be able to cut the short so that it moves quicker, and has more of a climax, near the end. But, its great the way it is, good job.

wow, thanks for the coms so far.

@Daniel Ho
yes, it's the compression the original .avi has 120mb, and that's too much for most of the people.
no i didn't play the game yet. but i always wanted..

@waters
right, i actually wanted to do more voices but i had to find out that this ist extremly complicated. and the voicetalents are friends of mine, no profs...

I want to know how more people aren't reacting to this. I remember back when you posted some early images of your character, the translucent shader is beautiful, and I really like the spin you have put on the whole robot/space theme that is done over and over. This is great work, and more people should be telling you so. :wip:

You probably need to visit divx.com and get the newest codec..

@waters:

thanx, man. this is really encouraging!!!
hey, you remember my posts about the robotimages.
reloaded the thread... ah, you replied.
the funnny thing is, i didn't change the robot after these pics.
and,.. er.., yeah. i think i wrote someting about "testanimations to come"...
but i had no time to do testanims.

@allpeoplewhocannotwatchthemovie:

it's the divX 5.03 codec

Dude. Simply amazing. There was so much character and persona put into the robot and little girl. As well as graphically created to perfection (sounds, characters, and enviroments). Voices were amazing too, well done.

THe music was also very well planned and made the whole video flow together.

So well done that i felt sad for the robot. Perfection. Flawless. Congragulations.:thumbsup:

This short just has FRONT PAGE written all over it.

This actually is one of the best animations i have seen on this forum so far. It most certainly is one of the most emotional pieces i've seen here.

I just love the mood ( brilliant choice of music and voice acting btw ) It did feel like silent hill tho, as mentioned before by Daniel Ho, but as that being one of my favorite games ever, that can only be taken as a compliment :thumbsup:

I guess none of the mods have seen this thread yet, for it surely deserves to be on the front page.

Kudos to ManiaX for this inspiring piece. :applause:

I am known to many as a cynical SOB and critical of most works, but this...wow! I was moved! The voice acting, the environments, the animation!

Holy crap! I may actually have a heart after all!:eek:

Beautiful, excellent work! You ought to be proud of yourself!

Now excuse me, I have to go cry over the fate of a set of pixels appearing on my computer screen...:cry:

that was great, the voice acting was good, the shader on the bot was great.

It is an intersting way to assemble the story, a series of flashbacks.

Technically it was very good as well, nice work!

Awesome!!!
Only critic for me is that the video might need some more action when the whole thing get's out of control, it's always the same music in the background and so with some change maybe you get some more parts more dramatic. The ending was so sad but also confusing, how did he manage to get out of there?
May I ask how old you are, and where is the Film School in Germany? When did you start with all this, at what age I mean.

I agree with the shader compliments and overall design - great work! Perhaps a slight dichotomy between the robot and background designs, but not really disturbing.

Can't say anything about the animation, I have the wrong divx codec.

@ cANt

ok, i'm 24 now (since march,22) and i started with 3d some years ago. i had no internet and no access to any software, so i was dependent on shareware. well my first 3d-app was pov-ray.(SOME years ago...)
but until i went to the GERMAN FILM SCHOOL (http://filmschool.de) , i just played around. this was spring 2001, i learned most of the things i know during the last two years.
the GFS is located in elstal:-) (somewhere between potsdam and berlin).

and, hey, if anyone is curious about the story, that's ok. i wanted to make the people think about it.

@dobermunk

the robot and scenery don't seem to fit together, on the images.
but that's just because the robot-pics are just testenderings without real light and background.

I've now seen the film. And I'm happy to say 'film' and not animation. Very nice mood throughout the piece, nice build-up and delivery.

Despite some weaknesses in tempo, I also think this is a front-page work - and the fact that it comes from a student only makes it more worthy!

I've watched the animation and overall i love the story and the music and the voice-overs. The mood was very nicely set.

One major problem for me was how dark a lot of the shots are. I saw some of the images and i found them to be much better lit. Could be the result of the compression or my monitor brightness (although i have looked at other shorts on my monitor and they didnt have this problem with being too dark).

Because of that it lessened the impact of the story for me. I also found some parts a little...vague? And the impact and effects of the crashing (re-activation of gravity) could have been stronger. E.g. could be something serious happened to the girl, the robot being more damaged etc. Also the music does get a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle monotonous after awhile..some slight variation to the soundtrack could improve it even more.

Nevertheless I enjoyed the piece. And i really really loved the music! Any chance i can use it in my own animation work-in-progress?

Wow... nice piece. I thought somthing really bloody would be the outcome. Now, THAT would be depressing. (right? she's just in cryosleep?)

Well, the only crit on your blood, sweat and tears, would be the music. Sometimes it's a bit too 'in the foreground' and repetative. It should be recessed more, especially when the people talk. That's the only thing I would change if it were my project.

I look forward to seeing it on Tech TV's EYEDROPS. (it would be perfect for that show)

ManiaX

@mahir:
thanks for the crits. i was afraid that it might be too dark, but when i saw it on the TV-screen it seemed to be ok. but it was my intention to keep the setting dark.

concerning the problems of the story, you are absolute right.
one thing is, that we (yes WE, a friend wrote and played the music...) did the whole sound in about 4 days because i just wanted to finish the film.
and i agree, that one major weak point is the reaktivation sequence. the box cashing into the panel is not stong enough. but when i realized this, it was too late.
originally the robot was really damaged. one half of his face was heavy damaged. but i thought it would be to scary and doesn't fit in the concept. --> better planning next time.

@cenobite:
hey, you are the first, who knew the girl is in the cryochamber.
and, as i said befor, i had no more time for proper soundediting.
btw, what's Tech TV's EYEDROPS?
