Anuran 10-07-2007, 12:54 AM Anatomy is a big focus for me right now. I am a strictly 2D artist/student. Here is some of my most recent work.
This is a master study of two paintings by Jacques Louis David:
Male nude known as Patroclus and Male nude known as Hector
This is pencil on an 18x24 sheet of Arches 90lb Hot Press
I am still working on developing my pencil rendering so....any help, would be quite welcome.

These are all from within the last few months, done from life at varying pose lengths. I have an antomy class once a week, so I will be adding to this thread at least that often.

This is more of the same. All fairly recent, done from life, 20 minute poses on all of these though. There's some 2.5 minute poses in the one above. I'm working on a study, for class, of an illustration in Richer and Hale's "Artistic Anatomy". That piece will be finished by Tuesday, so please check back in. I am also working on a perspective assignment which will probably include some figures which I may add later today or tomorrow.

You need harsh critique?
I think you are great! Amazing studies!:D
And by the way: Welcome! :)
Hi Dave
Wonderful thread start!
Those life drawings are amazing.
I also like those exercises where you draw the contour and place the bones inside to comprehend their function and position. I will be doing this type of exercises for sure during this schoolyear.
I will follow your progress with great enthousiasm.
Take care

Hi ...Dave ...:)
BEAUTIFUL STUDIES... ....LOTS OF WORK IN THOSE RENDERINGS..:applause:
You might try, just as an exercise and challenge to yourself in one of those twenty minute poses, to start with the models hand, or foot,..render it out in shadow, light, and a resonable amount of detail as time would allow and then work your way back into the figure,..putting the figure into a deep forshortened perpective, ..you might even let the figure get lighter and more atmospheric as it receeds into space and shadow or light, and your time for drawing begins to expire.:) ....wait until the model lends her or himself to such a forshotened pose and view, and then take advantage of it....Always challenge yourself to conqure your weakest areas ..just a passing thought that might be of some help to you in taking your figures and studies even further ..:)
REALLY looking forward to seeing more of your work, studies, and progress...
TAKE CARE

Very inspiring work! The studies where you have also sketched the skeleton structure inside the figures are wonderful. Hope to see more!:)

Thank you all for your kind words!
Glenn, that is a brilliant idea and as soon as I am given the freedom to do so, I am gonna try it.
Here's the aforementioned update.
This was the worst model I have ever saw. The guy moved around as if he had no idea people were trying to study his pose.
Plus some other stuff.

This was a one week assignment which was to basically scale up and copy, without tracing or gridding, this illustration from Richer and Hale's "Artistic Anatomy"

:)!! your stuff looks great! i love the angles in your work a lot! a nice eye for form! your forms need a bit more of a natural curve though. in your life drawings you capture the detail and form of the body beautifully, natural posture, they seem a bit stiff. try to work on the curvature of the body and weight shift on one side of the body to another.
great stuff!

Lots of stuff in progress right now....

I built this box as a sort-of autobiographical shadowbox. It will be used as the basis for a drawing. The idea behind this project is to render as photorealistically as possible. We are being given two weeks to draw it. You can see the aids in the photo. There is foam core "frame" with a string grid attached.

This is the beginning of another anatomy project. I am analyzing this photo in much the same way as I did the master analysis. I will use a mylar overlay to describe 10 muscular and skeletal landmarks in that photo, which will be rendered in full tone in pencil. Due next week.
and here's some life drawing from class.

About your box project:
the perspective is hard to show in this viewpoint so you should use every chance you get to do so. What I mean is with the bottom side of the box, you've added some lines to create depth. Don't be afraid to emphasize on the perspective a bit there, especially on the left corner, I think your lines should be more towards the centre.
I really like the exercise where you've added the bones and muscles inside your rendered drawing... I should do these more often

My biggest single stumbling block in drawing right now is my inability to recognize and render accurate tonal relationships. So, I was doing an experiment. On this first one, I put the grayscale there and changed nothing on process I have been using except to compare my values to the grayscale. On the next drawing (I have to do four of these in total) I am going to attempt to do a controlled 5 value drawing using some of the instruction in E.M. Gist's tutorial that's been floating around the web. None of that has anything to do with the assignment, I just wanted to address this issue at the same time.
On a completely unrelated topic anyone know anything about PAFA? I did a search here and got some info but, I was wondering if anyone in the figure forum, who had seen my work and knows about their curriculum, would be open to a Q&A session.
